2008 Santa Fe parking brake adjustment

Hi. First time poster here. I've looked through as many threads as I could related to this as well as Google and Hyundai Info Tech site. I can't find what I'm looking for. I have found some information on this forum about 2007 with drum brakes and that putting full tension 3 times automatically tightens it. I don't think this applies to since I have disc brakes.

My parking brake cable needs to be tightened up a little. It's a floor brake with disc brakes all around. I have found the area where the parking comes to and splits to the rear brakes and is also confirmed by a diagram I found on the Hyundai Info Tech site. I know I need to jack up the rear with the parking brake off, but what nut and where is it, that I need to tighten? Is it on top, bottom, front, or rear of the bracket? Any knowledge of the size of socket?

The '07 Santa Fe in the U.S. had disc brakes on all 4 corners.

As to the cable adjustment: You do operate the brake 3 times through the full travel before starting. The spec is that 130~140mm of travel on the pedal with 66lbs of force is applied .. not easy to gauge by feel! The nut on the end of the equalizer bar/clamp is the adjustment. Once you're underneath, it will be obvious as to where it is since you'll see two cables clamped in the bar and only one on the other side (illustration attached).

That said, how did you come to the conclusion that the cable needs to be tightened? Are you sure it isn't the automatic adjuster that is stuck or sticky and leaving the little drum parking brake loose? Before you fiddle with the cable, pull the plug from the disc, take a screwdriver, and rotate the star wheel down as many times as you can with a screwdriver. If you can do very much with a screwdriver, you should probably disassemble and clean up the adjustment components first.

As a rule with drums parking brakes, always adjust the shoes in the drum with the cables slacked off.
Then you can get final adjustment on the cable.
Check condition of your shoes and the brake lining profile. Is the leading edge worn thin?
If so replace shoes first.
If you don't understand the systems and have the tools, get a competant person or a mechanic to help you. Chris :)

Hi Brian...welcome to the Santa Fe forum.
Your 08 Fanta Fe comes with 4 wheel disc brakes. On the rear rotor Hyundai uses a drum type brake within the rotor. This is used to operate the e-brake only. You can adjust the rear e-brake two ways, applying the e-brake pedal several time's. If this does not work satisfactory remove the rear wheel's and adjust the brake shoes manuely.
This thread may help you.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm going off of old hand knowledge regarding emergency brakes and that typically adjusting the cable is all that is required when the brake can be pulled or applied to near full extension and the full brake pressure is not applied. I had a 95 Nissan and it was pretty simple to adjust when that occurred. Had to adjust about once every 2 to 3 years after it turned 7 years. Had that truck for 17 years.

I went back and re-read the 2007 Santa Fe parking brake adjustment thread link and I initially misunderstood what it meant. I thought it meant there was a drum brake in the rear, not a separate mechanism. Currently, my parking brake pedal can go to the floor and it doesn't apply the full parking brake pressure. It'll hold but it initially moves slightly after application on an incline. Based on on that I was expecting a cable adjustment would help apply the brake better.

I'll try the 3 presses at 66lbs and see of that helps. What's the best way do that, though? I know I can press more than 66lbs on one leg, so as canderson said, by feel would be pretty difficult.

I'm still under my 60 month 60K warranty. Would this be covered or is considered maintenance at this point? I may end up having them do this as I have a TSB that needs to be addressed anyway.
