Hi all,

I have a 2006 Sonata and it started quivering between 40 - 45mph. Does not always occur. I either have to ease off or step on the gas to remedy this. I have taken it to the dealer numerous times and the head mechanic took it for the weekend to test, but did not occur for him. Many months have passed and it now happens between 45 - 50mph. It has also stalled once sitting at a light and ac on max., but restarted with no warning lights. Yesterday after driving for 20 mins the ABS and ESC OFF warning lights came on. After restarting they did not illuminate again. Not sure if it is related though. The dealer has told me to keep driving it until the check engine light comes on. Has this happened to anyone else? The best way to describe the feeling is, it feels like going in and out of overdrive. Would be greatful for any input.

Thanks,
The quivering car

This is addressing the 45-50mph vibration only:

Have you had any tire work done? If so, due to the wheels, they need to be balanced with a good machine.

Sometimes bubbles develop on the tires, and they can mimic all sorts of suspension and engine transmission problems.

sounds like sometimes the car has shifted into the 5th gear, but is cranking a little bit slow... usually if you step on the gas or the brake to get to a different speed, it goes away.. i have noticed that once or twice with my car (and with my previous car)... its almost like its the one speed & gear level that the car doesnt like to really be in... like its not sure if it should shift to 4th or keep it in 5th....

of course, this doesnt say anything about the lights.. i have not had that happen....

i could be WAY off.. been known to happen

Geauga,

I have a similar issue with my 2006 V6. I've attributed my issue to the torque converter lock-up shudder. After my car has shifted into 5th gear (41mph) under light acceleration, I get the shudder. It's much worse with the A/C on. This happens about 25% of the time, but I have noticed the more miles I've put on my car the worse it gets. I'm hoping my Transmission will crap out on me before the 100,000 miles is up. I've taken this issue to the dealership a couple of times and they're of NO HELP! The impression I have of my dealer's service deparment is, if you can drive it then nothing's wrong. Anyway I'm looking into dealing with my issue on my own. I've taken a look at the suspension, motor mounts and sub-frame and everything look tightened down and ok. So, I'll be having the transmission flushed and I'm hoping this will take care of the issue. Good luck.

A Transmission Flush and this would help the problem?. I'm
only asking because this is a known issue of the Sonata, and for me
has dissipated over time.

Yes that 40-45 MPH wobble, I remember it well as it
was complaint # 1, next to the lack of performance of the 5 spd A/T. Since you
have the 2006 V 6, did you get the A/T PCM campaign done. I'm sure
some Sonatas have fell through the cracks on 'Service Programs".

This makes sense. My Mustang had a shudder under light acceleration. A TSB was found stating to drop the pan and change the filter. This solved the problem.

Scotty,

What happens if you accelerate a little harder after it shifts into 4th, and force it to shift at say 45-48mph? Have you already tried that?

Since I'm a nice guy, I did some search and found it. It may not at all be the same issue, but still, this was a thread by HDSIT from Denmark:

http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?sh...c=6559&hl=hdsit

"bumping from the tyres mostly from 65-70 km/h and forward." -- He went thru a LOT of visit to his dealer who tried just about ANYTHING. But as much as I remember he finally DID find the culprit (don't remember what) and fix it...

For whatever reason, as with many old threads, I can open only the FIRST PAGE, but not any further....

Sometimes you have to go back to the actual search results page and click page two or whatever page from there.  I don't know why.

Now if there was a Consultant Fee involved I bet you could have everything working in one Hour :innocent: . This Site actually works great, and never seems to see down time. And the functions of the site work well too. :trophy:

If you take this adress - you will get the full threads:

Well - Sorted the problem - yes and no. To start with - As far as i know - the european models (assembled in korea) have a different/firmer suspension than USA models - But now when it seems that there is some in USA with the same problems, it seems that suspension has nothing or less to do with it.
I found out after numerous visits at the tyrespecialist, that RFV-value (Road Force Variation) is critical. It seems that the car is extremly sensitive to high values. (I had my tyres tested with the Hunter GPS9700) - My car seems to give trouble if one or more tyres is more than 5 kg. - When below this value - no problems, or at least not noticeable unless you really looks for it.
I finally got all my tyres optimized to max 4.0 kg - and now it runs fine. I'm using the recommed tyrepressure, after i was told that overpressure will raise the RFV-value. - Now i got my tires rotated and rebalanced for every 5000 km. My mounted Premium Contact 2 (225/60-16) now have around 40000 km and still almost 7mm thread left - But i'm definately going for Michelin tyres next time. Mostely Michelin is said to have less problems...

I have in the past two years got confirmed, both from the importer, and from several customers, that it is a common problem with this model. But it can be minimized when the tyres really are taken cared of.

Well my car now has almost 50.000 km on the odo, and it has never been better. Everything is very smooth, and all components "fits" together. Fuelconsumption says average 10l/100 km with mixed driving, and that is pretty good. (using Mobil1 5W30 and K&N Air Filter)

3 months ago i even bought an older EF-sonata with 160.000 km on the odo - and it just runs perfectly, although i must say that the two models is hardly comparable - Something really happend with the drivingexperience with the NF-model - But the old model - i think it looks better (and really is a headturner)

Not sure if this is the same issue I've noticed, but at 45 MPH, the car is in 5th gear which makes the engine 'lug' along.. I can feel it balking because of the low RPMs. if I shift into 4th, it's smooth as can be.

I intend to talk to the dealer and/or factory rep and see if this can be changed. This car doesn't need to be in 5th gear unless it's over 55-60 MPG, in my opinion.

Because of it, I've started to shift the car manually about 75% of the time if I'm driving around town.
