My 2001 Sonata 4 cylinders 2.4l is having problem with starting for about 10 months now. It won't start at first crank but always fire at second attempt, irrespective of hot or cold weather, or warm or cold engine. Even if the engine is turned off for ten minutes, it would only fire after the second attempt. I ahve changed spark plugs to platinum types few months back and did not make any difference. Had also used the solvent type injector cleaner and mixed in premium petrol but no different. Recently based on advice received from a motoring body, I changed the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump (which was found to have broken fragments gone into the fuel filter but no further harm done); but it made no different as well. I also changed the fuse for the fuel pump (20A) even there was no visible defect at all, and it made no different. The mechanic has no clue so far and he thinks using OBD 2 scanner may not diagnose the problem. I suspect the crank position sensor and more importantly the wires, which go around the engine in close contact may have deteriorated over the years (130000km so far). Anyone can help to shed some light on this problem?
I also noticed the poor acceleration (hesitation, staggering, symptoms like stalling etc) in recent months whenever the stereo, air condition, fan on high, as well as another gadget like a bluetooth handfree kit plugged into the stereo and all running at the same time. The mechanic had checked the battery is good.
