I had an engine failure with my grandson's Sonata last fall at 137,000 miles, consumed a quart of oil in less than 120 miles. Definitely a collapsed piston but the dealer recommended replacement and Hyundai concurred.

I've had engines replaced in five vehicles and not one was challenged. Walked through the dealer bay last month and they had a dozen crated engines in the bay. Still had to wait three weeks for scheduled replacement: looks like they're very busy replacing engines.

I just had my motor replaced on my 2011 sonata se 2.4. 92,000 miles. They found shavings in my oil pan. No cost on my part. It was consuming lots of oil. I also had my heater core box replaced due to warped door, lucky I had extended warranty for that, just had to pay 100 dollar deductible. It has been a solid car til it got to 90,000 miles.

So I just got a call from my service adviser over lunch and it sounds like I won a new engine from Hyundai as well...after my last OIC check on Friday i had used 2.1 quarts in just over 1K miles. Now I just have to wait for the engine like everyone else, and was given a window of time that could be anywhere from 2 or 3 days to 2 or 3 weeks...it's all good

I have a 2011 with about 170,000 miles. It has been using about a quart every 500 miles (my records).
Started the oil consumption test with the dealer yesterday.

Questions:

1) Is there a specific usage that Hyundai has that would indicate a new engine would be granted?

2) If a new engine is installed what woukd the warranty be?

Thanks to the forum for giving me the info about this test.

I think it's same original 120k or 10 years, but with new engine at 160k I wasn't dare asking anything except saying "thanks". Cause they could've just say no and they would've been right.
