MPG Differences

I've found that what the car shows in the Inforrmation Center and what I actually get for mileage is about 1 MPG off (actual mileage being 1 MPG less).

Is this normal behavior and how does the car calculate it?

That's very good if it's accurate...the ECM "knows" how many times the injectors have fired and an approximation of the quantity of fuel. It can be 3 or 4% off...but then, how accurate is our manual calculation?

I use Fuelio, which does a pretty good job of calculating mileage. My manual calculations are only different by 0.04 mpg at most. The ECM is probably over by about 3.5% which is in the window you provided.

One trip to Chgo (which was stop and go in Milw for 20 min.) going 70 with air on I averaged 40 mpg for 200 miles. Shorter distances 20-30 I've averaged 46. I have to think it's running good for its age.

How are you getting that kind of mileage with an 8-year-old Sonata? It's not even rated that high.

Hopefully it's from the info center, but if not, he remembers his dreams.

The dash MPG display on my Tucson consistently reads 7% higher than measured.

Since the ECM is approximating each spray of the injector nozzle, over a longer period of time it is more accurate.

I don't try to rely on the mileage display for super accurate mileage, I just use to it compare one tank and/or one trip to another.
