Hi Everyone,

Have a 2000 Accent 1.5 with 73K. At startup, there is a large amount of valve train noise, kind of a racket. After everything is warmed up after 15 minutes or so it calms down considerably, almost seems what I would think of as normal. Question is, is this common in this model, and is this a warning of impending doom, or just a characteristic of the 1.5? Thanks so much for any help.

That would suggest bad hydraulic lash adjusters. If it was happening after the vehicle sat for a few days that may be normal.

Just reading the manual, it says if the car has sat for longer than 48 hrs, possibly oil has out of the lash adjuster. Noise will disappear within 15mins when the engine is run between 2-3000RPM.

The oil holes are very small that fed these so poor maintenance or build up could cause blockages.

You could try an oil change or even a lighter weight oil depending on what you use now, you could try removing them and cleaning them in diesel or it just maybe time to replace them.

Thanks Gerard, this is an outstanding post. I am due for an oil change, so maybe that will help. Sounds like it is more of a nuisance issue than a real problem, as long as oil is getting into the adjusters in the suggested time frame?
