2.7 awd. Long story short transmission failed. I am almost to the point of actually pulling it out. But do you actually have to drop the subframe? Or can it be weasled out. I have an engine hoist so I can support engine and drop just the tranny if subframe does need to be removed.

Yea, sub frame defiantly in the way. Check for excessive rust and corrosion on that sub frame. Exhaust manifold, drive shaft, CV, etc. A lot of parts need to come off before getting the trans out. Oh what a joy it was getting it out from underneath the car.
