Transmission only in 2nd gear

The light for the transmission is 'stuck' on '2', no matter where the selector stick is. Is this 'limp mode'? It drove OK until I parked it.
How can be reset, so I can drive the car home?

Not 'limp mode'.
Linkage (selector handle to transmission cable) disconnected due to missing cotter pin. I guess we drove it like that for ever...
