I'm sure there will be some debate, but what are the thoughts on Top Tier gas vs. grocery store had (Kroger or Giant Eagle in the midwest)?

Does it not matter? Should it be used always? Most of the time? Occasionally?

I use Costco almost exclusively. I don't want to have to worry about putting in fuel additives every scheduled maintenance. That and Costco gas is pretty much the cheapest in the state for high quality gas.

There is a lot of evidence supporting the use of top tier gas for newer cars that recommend it.

The smaller the nozzles on injectors get, the more likely they are to clog, and the more top tier gas is necessary. This is why newer more fuel efficient cars recommend their use. If you don't use it most of the time you fill up, expect to replace your injectors more often.

Is it recommended for the new Sonatas? I don't remember seeing that.

Why add fuel treatments?
Top Tier is recommended and, if not used, it is recommended that a fuel additive be used every scheduled maintenance, as stated in the manual.

LOL, someone should have told me 500,000 miles ago.....

I guess I'm lucky as I don't have fuel problems.

Do you use Quaker State oil like Hyundai recommends?

The Direct Injection Engines, like the Hyundai, per the owners manual (That big book in the glove box) states that if not using TOP Tier, then you need to add a fuel system additive regularly. DFI engines have a lot more deposits on the intakes.
Not using either may affect warranty should you have a fuel system issue.

Top Tier means that the fuel has the detergents required.

But it's not required right? How do you tell that the non top tier don't do the cleaning? How do you tell the top tier do a better job of cleaning?

It's your car, you can do what you want. But in direct injection engines, deposits are a serious problem. In engines that are already susceptible to problems (Hyundai), I think it's wise to do what you can to prevent problems. I used Techron additive every 5,000 miles when I got my 2011, because there was no Top Tier near me. Now I use TT.

Even with top tier fuel, deposits can still be a problem, depending on conditions including how a car is driven.

Direct Injection motors the valves never see any gas. So no dump in the tank cleaner will do anything as well as the "extra" detergents in Top Tier gas. The main problem with deposits is on the valve stem as the PCV gasses will carry oily byproducts in and coat them. When the engine is shut off the deposits on the stem coke up over time.

If you really want to put the various 'one and done in the tank' cleaners to good use, suck it into the intake through a vacuum hose while it is running, then feed enough to stall the motor towards the end. Let this sit for an hour and go and give it an Italian Tune up out on the highway.

It would be a good idea to clean or change the plugs and oil afterwards.

In my area Eastern Illinois and Western Indiana the price is all set by the suppliers so there is little difference in price unless it's between the suppliers, station brand has little to do with it. Top Tier is never mentioned or displayed.
