Has anyone experienced the shattering sunroof and/or joined the class action lawsuit? Just looking for anyone's experience so I can gauge what to do.

The sunroof on my 2015 2.0T Ultimate exploded out of nowhere the other day. Sounded like someone shooting off a shotgun next to my head. Ruined the paint on my trunk and there is glass all throughout my headliner.

Hyundai denied all responsibility and told me I could leave my car for "Hyundai to make a determination but they dont owe you a rental." Then they proceeded to tell me I was out of warranty so not to get my hopes up. I brought up the class action and they pretty much shut up and suggested I go through my insurance (which I did).

Hyundai corporate called me a few days later and offered to pay my insurance deductible. You ask me, that's an admission of guilt.

Guilty of faulty manufacturing of panoramic sunroofs which cause them to spontaneously shatter just as they are accused of in the class action. Why pay the deductible for something they aren't responsible for....?

Wow, I had not heard about the roofs exploding like that !

For me another reason that I dont want or like a sunroof. I was very happy that my 17 Sport did not have a sunroof. My last 5 cars have had them and I never used them other than to check that they worked. When Im in the car personally I want a nice quiet , cool ride in the summer and a warm ride in the winter. When I want to experience the wind and sun Ill ride my Road Glide to work or travel.

It's been a problem for quite a while actually. Earliest I've heard was from a news clip on YouTube, 2013 if I remember correctly. There were a couple cars, one was a YF, the other I forget but not Hyundai. The clip said that too much heat builds between the liner and glass and to vent the heat before heading out. I think it's because the frames flex too much, and since the glass is tempered, it doesn't take much for it to explode. This is just a shot in the dark guess. I have no idea how well everything's engineered and I'm no expert in anything mechanical.

What he said. THere are other threads of exploding sunroofs on other models...? I know I have been reading about them since I got here in 2014.

I can't believe Hyundai would try to deny an issue, or refuse to cover it when it's a given issue.

Take the deductible. It's more than the $35 you'll get from the Class Action. The princicples and the lawyers will get millions; you'll get a coupon for a car wash.

You can try and pressure them to replace it. Check with your agent and see if it will increase your premium. It shouldn't. And, if you have Comprehensive, chances are there is no deductible for glass (win-win for Hyundai)

It is the panoramic glass roof that does pop and break, it's the flex in the roof support that is causing it. Or so the service advisor has reported.

The sunroof also broke/shattered in my car. It happened with the previous owner who is a good friend of mine. He said it was replaced by Hyundai. It happened a little under 2 years ago. 2015 Sonata Sport Turbo Ultimate.
