Hi,

Has anyone had their steering wheel peel away as a result of hot weather?

The top of ours is peeling away fast.

Does anyone know if this would be covered under warranty?

I had mine replaced under warranty.

This is a huge problem for the MD Hyundai Elantra, so I wouldn't be shocked to see it on other models as well. My Elantra wheel was replaced under warranty due to this.

I read somewhere that Hyundai's leather-clad steering wheels aren't real leather. It's certainly 'harder and thinner' than other leather wheels I've had (on both my old iX20 and current i30), and not, in my opinion, particularly pleasant in the hand. But is there any truth in it?

Yes, it's on the "leather" wheels. It's definitely not 100% real. Mine had this thin top layer that started bubbling, then peeling. Real leather would never do that.

Checking back, the i30 forum says it's basically imitation leather that has traces of real leather in it!

As Hyundai's website says "Leather Steering Wheel and Gear Knob" (for both iX20 & i30) I don't really know how they get away with it. My last car was a Suzuki SX4 - another cheapy - but the leather wheel was definitely leather.

Not helping with Hyundai's upmarket aspirations (and pricing)...
