Hi there
I have an 08 Veracruz that has been smelling for a while. It doesn't exactly smell like "sulfur" but it is bad. It doesnt smell like burning, or oil. For a while we thought it was carpets in the car that didnt DRY - kind of like that smell of something web not drying properly.

But when we start the car its really bad through the vents....so doesnt explain the carpets

We recently had a code for the Cat. Is it possible that its the cat smelling the car? What about an exhaust leak, if so where should I look for that?

If you can't hear the leak you'll need to get under it. Look for soot around welds and where the pipes are joined. You can feel with your hand and find where it's coming out. If it's hot use a piece of paper and it'll wave at you. When cats go bad they can't convert the gases and that's what produces the smell.
Though you should be able to hear it.

It was originally the fuel that caused the cat to smell like sulphur but that was many years ago. When the cat is cold it does nothing anyway. If a cat was faulty it would only give a rich fuel smell nothing like smelly carpet. Perhaps replace your cabin filter if the smell is coming through the air vents.
