The illustration is from a pre-2016 model, but that's the method to get the bumper off. I believe the 2017+ models are only aesthetically different. A few screws/bolts in the lights, wheel well, and on the frame and you're good to go. If I'm understanding your OP correctly, the trim piece you need to replace is the bottom piece attached to the bumper and can be removed once the whole bumper is removed.

I've removed the bumper a few times to mess with the exhaust. Once everything is unscrewed, just use a trim tool to pop the plastic tabs and the whole bumper comes off easily.
