Funny thing is, the problem seems to be going away for me. And this week we had record temps here in NY. The other day my car was in the parking lot at work with no shade at all and heat blasting from the blacktop. Temp was 109 and to my surprise, my radio was fine. I thought for sure it would be dim.

Hey - did you get YOUR Tucson yet?????
Nope. I have 3 things working against me. We still haven't received the one I want, I'd really like to see the new Sportage before I buy the Tucson, and my fiancee really wants to keep the Santa Fe. We shall see, but I'm not in a rush. Thanks for asking

I don't think that looks fine. It should be darker than that.

109?!!. We hit 104 Tuesday and 102 yesterday. Hottest days here in almost 20 years and the first time it hit over a 100 2 days in a row in almost 50 years. Today was cooler but much more humid. This should be a "fun" summer thanks to our awesome winter.

Yes I agree it should look darker. But the fact that it is even visible at 109 was surprising. 109 was the outside heat. Imagine how hot my interior was!!! It's just weird because I've seen 85 degree days where my radio wasn't even viewable and had to wait for it to cool down. Yet on the hottest day of the year it was clearly readable. I don't get it. Like I said, it seems to be getting better. I know that makes no sense from a technical standpoint. I still think it's a cheap LCD screen that has heat related issues. I just don't know why mine seems to be getting better in the heat.

It does make sense. On my Santa Fe, it seemed like once it "warmed up" the numbers on mine would display. We got some Sonata's in yesterday. While it was extremely humid, it wasn't too hot. The screens were so dim, I could barely see the station numbers on 2 of them.

Noticed it for the first time on my GLS while the car sat in the parking lot all day in 90 degree heat. After driving about 20 minutes with the a/c running it mysteriously corrected itself. Wonder if this will be a recall down the road.

Joined the forum because I just purchased an '11 Sonata SE (w/o nav) and had this SAME exact problem. I havent had complaints later in the day or at night -- so it leads me to believe the heat might be causing the problem. I notice it when I get in my car in the middle of the day or right after work when its been sitting outside my job in direct sunlight.

My question: does anyone here have their windows tinted and if so, has that helped any? (Just thinking maybe it has to do with sun exposure and not just high temperatures, which would jive with what people are saying about cloudy but hot days)

Other than that, I'm so far pretty happy with the car. I am coming from a 2007 G35x, and before that I had a 2004 G35 coupe.

Had my radio replaced by the dealer. This radio display is actually worse in hot weather than the original. Is Hyundai even admitting there is no fix for the display problem yet? Any TSB's? I guess they are hoping the complaints will go away in the fall with cooler weather.

I guess I'm gonna slap this one from the dead. I don't think Hyundai will ever issue a TSB for this. I know some people are upset with the display malfunction but it's not a problem as in a sense it's detrimental to the car. Has anyone considered that maybe this is the natural way that LCD reacts to being exposed to extreme temperatures. I've experienced this problem a couple times in my 2008 Sonata (when I had it) and my dad's '99 Elantra GLS which has a tiny simplistic LCD display. Whenever both cars have sat out in direct sunlight with the heat bearing down on the top of the dash, the display fades (or in the case of the Elantra distorts the CD and Track Numbers) which in both of our cars was a tale-tell sign that the radios were close to overheating and shutting down in order to prevent damage. I mean some of you can continue going to your local Hyundai dealership and demand that they put new stereos in but really it still won't change the outcome. Trust me, some of you that are having problems with the display in the summer will be right back here when winter comes stating how the LCD on the radio is very slow or "freezes" on the display...which is something I have experienced also. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but I don't think there's much Hyundai (or any auto manufacturer) can do in a situation like this but switch out radios which may or may not solve the problem.

It is not the natural way the LCD works, especially considering the clock/temp display are fine in the heat, while the radio is not. I live in Saginaw, TX and it has been HOT here!

I picked up my 2011 Sonata GLS 4 days ago... I have 250 miles on it and the display has lost 1/2 of it's contrast and the outside temperature was 82F.
This morning the outside temperature was 70F and the display was ok... for now.

The dealer has scheduled the car in for a radio inspection this coming Monday.
They said that they did not know of this problem.

Hope that will tell me the truth and repair as I ordered a full wood trim kit for the car and would not want to put on the radio and having to order another kit for the replacement radio.
Other than that , I love driving this car.

This is a known problem for the 2011 GLS stereo. Take it to your dealer and once they verify the dim readout they order a refurbished unit. It took 4 working days for mine to come in. They installed it the next day (9-3-10). I'm not happy about it be a refurbished unit, but it works perfect and is actually newer than mine was. Oh yeah, the display is as bright as the clock is. One caveat: XM radio. You will need to call XM and supply the new radio id number. You tune to channel zero to view it. The number I used was 1-800-248-4114. When I called XM they told me the radio was registered to another person. I had to explain about the dealer changing radios under warranty. There was no charge, but the 90 day free trial will be based on the "new" radio, so it may be longer or shorter than your original. If you want to use XM past the free 90 day trial you can ask for the $77.00 a year promotion. With the music royalty fee it cost $88.78 for one year. If your State has internet tax then that will add to the total.
