The Cobra's are pretty crappy, not sure about Whistler. Its definitely better than Cobra though.

I would get a Bell, I think they are the best value for the money. Valentine is certainly the best, but it cost something like 4x as much as the others.

Check in car magazines, they almost always have ads for them and some give a warranty or say they will pay your first ticket if used properly.

I have an Escort Passport 8500...absolutley love it. I have had it for yrs and havent had a ticket yet. I travel for work and drive roughly 50,000 miles a yr, so I use it more then the average user would. Escort offers a trade in on detectors also...they will give you $80 towards the purchase of a new detector....and it doesnt have to be an Escort brand detector you are trading in. The 8500 is roughly $300 so its not cheap...but it works great.

Just my 2 cents

Do your self a favor and take a look at the Escorts. They have several new models including the 9500IX that utilizes GPS Technology to track and eliminate false alerts. They also have a feature that tracks Redlight Camera's and Fixed position speed camera's and store's them in memory and alerts you as your approaching one. Really neat, you may want to spend a few extra bucks for these types of features. As previously mentioned in another post, Escort also has an $80.00 trade in program. I was able to pickup a unit from an "authorized" dealer and they did not require sending in the trade in, now I have the old unit as a backup for my second vehicle, but I usually opt to transport the 9500IX, as my area is growing with Red Light Camera's.

My OLD passport failed and was not picking up signals anymore. I replaced it with a Escort 8500 x50 to try based on great reviews on some radar forums. The problem I had even though it was mounted by my mirror was there was no extra light that came on to give me a "visual" clue and with the windows down, tunes on I could not hear it since it doesn't get that loud. The display would change from highway to Ka band but it didn't flash or any variety there of so just the subtle change didn't alert my eyes on peripheral. After 2 weeks I bought the Valentine1 to try and had both in the car active X-50 close so I could see it TRYING to get to love it and save $200 with the V1 way off on passengers side. During the next 2 weeks the Valentine was much easier to hear and the bogey count/direction locator saved me TWICE as cops were 1/2 mile apart around corners. The first cop both times was easily picked up by me and the guy next to me with a whistler on his dash. After that he sped up but my count changed to 2 and started flashing with warning in front on the V1. I stayed at the limit the other went around corner and got pulled over where the trap had 3 chase cars waiting. same basic scenario but on my own no other cars a week later. After that the X50 went back. It DID pick up that it had 2 signals but you could barely see the bar graph indicating and no beeps like the V1 to say it was picking up another source.

The down side of the V1 it definitely picks up EVERYTHING and can get annoying around town unless you switch modes. Most of my drive is highway where I use it and on ski trips so I'm OK with that.

Let's not even get started on Audi lane change warning (radar) and Infinity Laser Cruise control.

The 9500IX is very nice (especially around town)(my friend has one) but same short falls for me about visual/audio. I have a cheetah C50 camera detector so I don't need a different radar detector for the cameras which are popping up EVERYWHERE by me.

You can't wrong with either of these 3 as well as most of the Bells. There is a reason you can buy a Cobra in EVERY auto store and Walmart for $29.99 many carry the Whistlers also. Save for a little longer and get better stuff the first time.

Maybe it's just how I see the picture but it looks like it's aiming up at the sky not down the road. The closer to level the better.

You could also read up here radardetector.net and can buy from HERE.

I've had a detector in every car I have owned for many years but this interior is tight and highly integrated so finding a lead that is hot when the ignition is on is a challenge.

Any suggestions on a good mounting position... and best custom installation with hidden power?
