Hi. I have an i40, 1.7 crdi and I notice that the oil pressure light takes up to four seconds to go out when the engine is cold. I am just wondering if this is normal or is it something I should be concerned about? We also have an avensis diesel and the oil pressure light goes out immediately whether the engine is warm or cold. Many thanks in advance for any response to my query.

Assuming you are using genuine oil filters, or at least good quality aftermarket ones the three reasons for slow pressure build up in order of probability are, 1. oil pressure switch is out of tolerance and switches late. 2. low viscosity oils. 3. worn out engine. I found my i30 diesel was taking a similar times to get oil pressure and sounded very mechanical on cold starts, I changed from 5W30 oil to 10W40, it made a world of difference, both to oil pressure build up and general engine smoothness. Get the oil pressure of your engine checked with a standard gauge and maybe test the pressure switch. Cheers.
