I fell in the love with my friend's 2009 Lotus Exige S 240, but I can only afford to buy one used; however, I could get a fully loaded Mazda MX-5 new for the same amount of money. But the Exige is so much more sexy and fun. Working on cars myself is no big deal. I'd even consider a 2005-2007 Elise.

If I go with one of these options I would just keep my Sonata for DD instead of trading it in for a new Audi RS3 that would be my DD and fun car all in one. I probably won't 'pull the trigger' until Christmas time, but would like input.

Things to consider.

- I live in Ohio, so I def wouldn't drive any Lotus during the months with road salt on the ground.

- I can drive a manual car, but has been a long time.

- The Lotus is mechanically cheap to work on. (To me)

- If I got the MX-5; I would drive it way more. (Warranty ftw)

- I don't care that the Lotus is missing X,Y,Z features

My mind says the MX-5 is the logical choice, but my heart is screaming Lotus.

Well, if it was me I would get the new Audi RS3 . As you said, you would be getting the best of both worlds, fun and practical all in one car. Plus it is also a lot nicer to have a new car instead of a ten year old one. So what did you decide to do in the end ?

I may do what he did and get the exige S and swap in Elise shocks for a softer ride. He has spent less than 3k in maintenance, upgrades since he bought it. And he drives it at least 4 times a week. Most of the 3k he spent went towards boosting the power to 300HP and he says it is just as reliable as a stock one. You really can't beat how reliable the stock toyota engine is and its super cheap to work on. I just love the way the exige and elise look. I'd like to get the RS3, but my financial advisor said I should hold off until I sell my starter house and get into the house I really want. Also, the RS3 is no street legal go-kart like the elise and exige. You really got to drive one to understand. Not to mention the whine of the supercharger in the exige, omg is it sexy.

Learning to drive a stick isn't hard. Even on economy cars a stick shift makes you feel more connected to the car.

" a stick shift makes you feel more connected to the car" Do you know that is the exact same thing that watch collectors say about watches ? That an automatic or hand wind watch makes them feel more connected to their watch as opposed to a quartz watch. So I really know what it is that you are saying and I agree with you.

The knee jerk response is to get the lotus and never look back. It is much more for a drivers car than a miata. Having said that, the 2019 miatas appear to have a more powerful engine and perhaps there's a version with a more aggressive suspension. I might wait just a little to see what the new miata drives like, but still---a Lotus Elise is the ultimate expression of a drivers car. You feel everything. You hear everything. And it's a lotus, so it will offer a unique overall owenership experience being a bit exotic, at least in the US. That's where I'd go, but I'm also euro centric in what I like in cars.

Wanted to update this. I'm still on the fence about what I want to buy. I'm coming into some money later this year. Lets just say it's enough money to outright buy a new fully loaded RS3 with audi care included. I found a nice 2011 Elise SC but wouldn't be able to drive it until late March of next year due to Ohio weather and salt. So i'm thinking for now; just upgrade my Sonata to something better. When the weather is good for an Elise i'll buy one outright in Spring.

Well do you want a car or a toy ? A client of mine had a Lotus Elise and I drove it taking him out to lunch - absolutely astounding handling, reasonable acceleration, he was planning to put a turbo on it. But I was 60 at that time, some arthritis (a lot more now) found the Lotus really a challenge to get out of, you sit so low in it. After a year my friend tired of it and sold it.
Lotus operated in a narrow niche, last I heard they were planning to comply with US regs and in 2020 bring cars back , but don't whether that will happen.
They are simple to work on though and iirc it's a Yota 4 cyl they use.

More of a toy, but the adult/parent side of me is thinking a Q3, S3, or something similar. I found a new 2017 Jaguar XE 35T PRESTIGE. I'd seriously consider that my 'meet in the middle' choice, but idk about it's reliability as a daily driver.

Link below to Colin Chapman's quotes, but his "simplify, than add lightness" definately is seen in the Elise, besides lacking stuff like AC I'm not sure there are airbags or much of any standard safety equipment, my friend who had one said driving I-25 on his work commute he was nearly crushed several times by large trucks that couldn't see the Lotus - it's profile is so low to the ground and the lower third of one's body sits under the door rails - which I think also serve as the frame. Took me several minutes to exit the car.
But if you get in an accident you would be road kill. Nothing handles like a Lotus though, it is "on rails" and the driving experience is completely transposed to that of a Hyundai - where road feel, steering input and all that good stuff is intentionally insulated from the driver.

I got in and out of my friend's exige just fine. But I am on the short side. 67" tall.

I found a new 2017 Jaguar XE 35T PRESTIGE. I'd seriously consider that my 'meet in the middle' choice, but idk about it's reliability as a daily driver.

Jaguars are about the same as the rest of the European bunch for reliability. Not as good as the Japanese but intrinsically good.


They are possibly better to drive as Jaguar put a lot of effort into providing that connection the Germans seem to have given up on, majoring more on adding as much power as possible for better headline figures nobody can actually use. The XE is supposed to be very good to drive. My spin in one was too short to be sure but it was certainly good on the lane change brake test we were playing on (absolutely no spins) at one of the Jaguar events.


Try one especially on a nice windy road :)
