I am puzzled why the master cylinder would be on the passenger side far away from the brake pedal. Anyone?

What side is the passenger side?
Here in the UK it's not that unusual to have the master cylinder on the passenger side because most cars are designed to be LHD.

Ok for my brittish friends I will simplify this for you. Why would any car manufacturer place the master cylinder on the opposite side of the firewall than the driver.

most cars are designed for the LHD market and it would simplify design. Space may also be a limiting factor. What do you think of no separate reservoir for the clutch master ?

So the brake line fitting on the master cylinder wasnt a 10 nor a 12mm. I ordered an 11mm and it was sloppy. I considered heat, but I could see the 11mm would not grab properly even if I had heat. Thought about a dremel, but luckily had an epiphany. A small pipe wrench worked perfect. FYI
