We have an 07 with a 5 speed and even though my wife did pretty good when I was teaching her to drive it in a parking lot she just refuses to drive it. We are getting a second car for me bit rather than sell this there are quite a few similar car at some local pull a part with cheap parts so I'm kind of wondering with cheap parts available rather than sell it to try and find her a decent running automatic car for cheap, what parts would I need to swap to go to an automatic? Will the auto bolt up? Does the ecu control shifting? What year cars could I pull the parts from?

The car runs really good but the transmission has some strange noises coming from it ( I think previous owner put wrong fluid in it) so it kind of needs a new tranny anyways I think and we got the car so darn cheap kind of makes since to just swap it if its possible.

You don't want to go to an automatic. WAY to much going on for you to tackle that.
Sell it and get her another vehicle......you and her will be much happier.....especially you when your dealing with her because it's been a month and her car is still not working....

Why would it take a month..... I literally dropped the trans out in a couple days when I did the clutch lol. I mean that seems like it would be the hard part. Unless like my old VW the cranks are different or something, granted that was more going from auto to manual as the auto crank had an extra lip and the manual trans was flat without a recess for it.

You would need to do programming to modules, probably replace one at least but more than likely two, you would need add to the fuse/relay center under hood, take that to the dash and fuse box and run a wiring harness to the new trans module and then to transmission. It's not at all like the old automatics that were not computer controlled.

If you are bent on doing it you would do well to find a totaled vehicle that has the automatic and it would go much easier but you'll still have to do factory programming after you finally finish all the transferring.

Thanks that's the info I was looking for. I just don't think we would get much for the car and its a pretty good running car, we got it off a friend for $500 and they replaced the engine with a low mileage engine like a year before we bought it. Idk I'll have to research some, i thought these cars were simpler since they were so cheap new.

If I swapped over the ECU, Tranny, TCM (assuming the transmission module is called this lol) and the original engine wiring harness from the same car (maybe gauge cluster?) what programming would need to happen? Are there vin related programmings on these? I don't know I was originally considering ordering a new manual trans from hyundai because I saw they were like 400 bucks brand new lol, but then was thinking I might be able to buy all the parts from a yard to make it auto for that. The work doesn't really scare me as I've done my fair share of extensive work (pulled and rebuilt engines etc) it's more just whether or not I can get it working as I don't think programming tools are available outside of dealers and shops for these?

This is why I STRONGLY suggest a donor vehicle. I'm not sure if there's issues with needing what modules for sure and then the modules may have to be married. You may need to have vin ID and gear ratios flashed. etc. It's going to be very detailed.

Listen to grcauto here, he is spot on. You can't imagine the many parts/pieces you'll need to make this swap. If you don't have a "donor car", it'll nickel/dime you to death. I can't believe your going to put this much time and money in a $500 car, doesn't make sense to me even if it were worth 2-3 times what you paid for it.

Drive the M/T for what it is.. or buy an automatic car..

TCM is integral part of PCM,, M/T PCM usually has 1 main connector,, auto trans car has 2 PCM connector, the we may run into pin location differences,,

Myself, I grew up on M/T by my own choice,, started with motorcycle on learner permit, then when car come along, my first 2 was auto, because they given to me,, then come Celica, M/T by my own choice,, I dont like autos..

Sad state of world when M/T is now considered an "anti-theft" device...

LOL....Seen on TV the a while back of a guy who tried a carjacking and couldn't drive it and was caught about 10 minutes later less than a half mile down the road from where he robbed the guy and tried stealing the car. The clutch was smoking so bad they had the fire department come out. In this case it didn't work as an anti-theft but it did make the theft incomplete.

First car was a stick, 74, 75 Ford Pinto truck back, had a motor we swapped from a newer model (guy delivered it and motor blew in the driveway). Taught myself to drive standard on my own, stalled twice and then it came natural. Worked for AAA driving wrecker covering a single Connecticut/New England town. Hills like mad, roads on cow paths, 300-600 miles a day, stop and go, go and stop. Idiots pulling up six inches behind a Cadillac, Lincoln, whatever, on icy hills. Early 90's Chevy truck clutches, heavy as ****. Stopped driving stick, never will, can't now with my disability so there's that. Couldn't even shift a motorcycle now.:surprise:

I hate having to be at a red light or stop sign on a steep hill and the IDIOT behind me gives me less than a inch.I've let my truck tap them a bit and nearly got into a road rage incident with one guy. Oh well, CC permit ended the problem while waiting for the police.
Sorry to hear your problem is that bad. Hope you don't deal with a lot of pain. I'm pretty buggered up with osteoarthritis in my back, I broke it twice and have psoriatic in my hands, hips and feet.....not to bad but not fun when it flares up.

I've had no choice but to roll back, even engaging the micro-lock braking system and burning the heck out of the clutch it's impossible for a wrecker and two tons of car NOT to roll back something when getting going on a mega hill in ice. I've even gotten out of the truck and screamed at a guy that I WAS going to hit him and it was his fault.

Pain's bad. At the limit the government has now set for pain medication allowed per month. Everything is a mess.
