Has anyone secured luggage on the roof of a SUV with factory-installed raised side rails w/o using cross bars? I am considering using ratchet straps as tie-downs. Will this be sufficient or unwise w/o cross bars?

I have a 2007 Tucson SE.

Yes, I do it all the time. Just be aware that with ratchet straps you can break the side rails by over tightening.
