Me and my husband are looking at purchasing a 2004 XG350. The car has a top end engine noise that is a loud metallic rattle that seems to match the rpms, however once the car is put into drive, the sound goes away. We're trying to figure out if the sound is something that is A) not safe to drive on (as we will need to relocate the car to a local mechanic where we live), and also B ) it will turn out to be costly enough that it won't be worth it.

The car itself is well maintained, with about 170,000kms on it.

Well maintained means timing belt (an expensive job on this engine) was already done at least once, and record of transmission oil changes is also available ?

I have a 3.5 engine, they are more of a challenge to work on and parts can be expensive. The noise sounds like a cyclinder head noise ; I wouldn't chance it unless husband is a mechanic.
They are are a very nice looking/handling car which makes it tempting.

I've heard something like this noise before on a high mileage motor. found it to be nothing really, but a loose crankshaft belt pulley. Just tightened the bolts, and it was good as new ;)

Easy enough to check, hopefully, this is only your issue?
