hi Guys

Can anyone point me to the location of the oil pressure relief valve ?

Need to replace it urgently but cant find a guide.

There is a schematic of the engine but I can't find it in real life from that.

A picture or video would be super useful.

Many thanks in advance

Have we verified OE filter use (per other thread started about oil pressure) ??

FYI, in all the yr this engine been out, we have not had any issue like you ask about...

Now, on to the pressure relief,, it is part of the oil pump, to which is an integral part of the front cover (timing chain cover).. this will require partial tear down of engine,, GDI pump, cam cover (gaskets and new GDI delivery pipe for re-assemble and torque also for GDI pipe nuts). oil pan come off, then front cover last..

Assembly be front cover, oil pan, cam cover, GDI pump, and GDI pipe (torque wrench for nuts)..

Thanks for the detailed post ...very little info out there

Sorry didn't understand what the OEM filter meant in the past post ...but was good idea to check the oil pressure ..

Reasons why suspect the oil pressure relief valve.

There was a lot of burnt smelling sludge in the engine due to the Hyundai dealer service not refilling the oil early around the running in period ...found out a few days after and stupidly didn't complain at the time .

Fast forward to 75000 km mark ...When I added the 1 litre synthetic oil to top up the regular oil the problem started.

Yesterday after a good oil flush change and from cold the motor ran perfectly smoothly for 1.5 hours thru rev range and sounded quoet well lubricated.

I then revved car and the oil pressure light went on and tappet sound started.

This has happened few times...no oil pressure light car smooth for say 30-60 mins then suddenly oil pressure seems to stop with light and tappet noise.

So seems unusual oil pump could start and stop ...thinking sludge flushed thru engine and oil pickup blocked or pressure relief valve getting stuck.

I was hoping the prv could be accessed easily and as only $20 replace that see if fixes.

Its a pain being intermittent and kids to drive ...

Next step pressure test or to $$$ mechanic which really can't afford just now but such is life Hahahaha

Is this thing a "MUD" (sludge) engine" ????

If yes, then cogging of oil pick up in pan going to be a problem.. I would use 1 qt of ATF and fill remainder (maybe litle extra) with synthetic motor oil, and drive on highway to get real hot and allow hot oil to eat away at mud and thin it down, drain it out and repeat,, DO NOT DO CHEMICAL FLUSH !! No lubricant in a chemical flush, and engine will destroy itself without lubricant,, so it sound like we is taking pan off and clean pan and pick up screen as a start, and chasing with ATF- engine oil cocktail to do the rest,, synthetic motor oil works best over time

Thanks man..bit to do today ....will update later

Silly question ..what's ATF mean?

My friend said automatic transmission fluid ...very runny oil..

Sounds like a plan ...thanks ...no dangers using ATF ?

Any advice of best grade synthetic oil to help flush...nylon does a 0w 20 or a 5w20...

Cheers

5/30 MOBIL-1 Synthetic,, or Royal Purple be 2 top choice,, go rough 1/2 - 3/4qt ATF, and remainder motor oil... run about 1500 - 2500 mile with a good amount of highway to do hot oil wash inside,, drain and repeat

Big concern is what is in pan currently and possible restriction of pickup screen....

There is a product called Auto-RX that is designed to slowly over 10-20k miles remove the sludge. Most of it goes the first 5k. Just normal driving and you change the oil filter after 2000 miles or so.

Change the oil/filter and keep driving. Change it EVERY time you have a low oil pressure incident and keep an eye on oil level, checking and verifying full level before EVERY engine start.

SN/GF5 oil will slowly clean the sludge out. I would probably do 2-3 oil&filter changes with cheap Supertech walfart or store brand SN/GF5 conventional before adding anything to the oil.

I wouldn't worry about the oil pressure relief valve. You are more likely experiencing thin oil caused low PSI especially when you oil pump pickup screen is partially clogged. When you shut off engine, crud may fall of the oil pickup screen allowing the reset.

Don't use ATF. Its an old wives tale.

Do use the 5w40 and 15w40 diesel engine oil, after several SN/GF5 runs, as they have higher level of detergents/dispersants and aren't as greenie as the sn/gf5 engine oils. Other grades to use are 0w40, 10w40, 5w50, 0w50, 0w30... Don't use 0w20 or 5w20.

You can add a pint of Rislone or Marvel with each oil change. This stuff is cheap and sold in quarts so you'll get a couple runs out of the bottle. CD2 engine detergent, in pints, was pretty good too but I haven't seen CD2 locally in a long time. Not sure if turtlewax discontinued the product or sold it off.

If after several oil/filter changes and the issue repeats, i would drop the oil pan and remove the valve/rocker cover, and clean everything up as well as possible. Button it up, refill, and keep driving. Change oil/filter every time there is an issue and keep oil level full checking often.

The problem with Autorx is that you won't be able to run it long enough if the issue occurs every 30-60 minutes.

Walmarted may also have the PH9688 and 51334 filters too.

Others like using the cheap OEM filter.

Prior to changing oil filter, and only if engine is cold and waiting for an oil/filter change, you can use any of the 5-15 minute solvent/ether/ester/glycol engine flushes. Change oil&filter immediately after the 5-15 minute run. For example:

Once you can run 2000 miles without loss of oil pressure, give the ARX a try:

or 4 ounces of this at every oil/filter change:
[ame]https://www.amazon.ca/Lubegard-30916-Heavy-Engine-Protectant/dp/B006HI8H90[/ame]

Don't blame the dealer. Its up to YOU to check oil level regularly, keep engine oil level full, and change the oil&filter frequently enough to avoid creating a sludge/mud engine.
And, since you said KM, you'll have to use equivalent products that are available wherever you are.

If you are stuck on using 0w20 or 5w20 oil, fill first with a pint of STP or Lucas at every oil/filter change:

[ame]https://www.amazon.ca/Lucas-LUC10130-Synthetic-Stabilizer-Quart/dp/B000ARPVNY[/ame]

[ame]https://www.amazon.ca/STP-17680-Ultra-5-Performance-Treatment/dp/B06XRFYGYR[/ame]

And, remember to never use more than one snake oil at a time per oil/filter interval.

Wow..very much appreciated each bit your advice all useful and relevant (dead great post) many thanks

At moment just has third oil change with on special shell oil hx7 from memory 10w 40...

Lo an behold your right ....low pressure light finally went off so drove around all day to confirm ...no problems light off and as bonus engine warning light also reset ...sounds much smoother top end too 🙂

Also bought full synthetic 5w 20 before reading post but understand your point about higher viscosity so will take that on board

Then booked an oil pan removal clean inspect inc oil pick up ( will get pressure check too)

Gents cannot thank u enough was bad timing intermittent fault and could have spent lots $$$ didnt have and u came through with right info in a short time...blessings and big thanks 🙂
