Hyundai i20 2009 plate. My mother put her key into the ignition to start the car and turned it as far as the power to come on but not the engine and it became stuck. The key cannot move into the off position either. The key does not move apart from in and out slightly. The remote locking had stopped working as the battery had died in the key shortly before she attempted to drive (this could be connected). Tried all of the usual tricks: steering lock etc. New battery was put into the key but when the buttons are pressed there is no response from the vehicle. Any advice would be helpful.

Check to see if the car thinks it is in gear. If so, most ignitions will not allow the key to be moved into the "off" position that allows the key to come out. Also, check the underside of the steering column near the ignition. If there is a hole, try putting in a Phillips screw driver and go straight up. Some cars have a manual release button that when pressed, will allow the ignition(Key) to be turned back to off and removed. Then you can start troubleshooting if it is the gear sensor, or the release in the ignition or some other electrical failure between.
