Greetings,

My daughter's 2000 Elantra will not pass state inspection because they cannot get a reading from the computer. No codes...nothing.

She has taken it to PORTER HYUNDAI in NEWARK, DE. They did her timing belt awhile ago. I don't think the trouble is related as this started well after they did the belt. The initial problem was that the car on several occassions would stall in traffic. They said it was a short in the O2 sensor and replaced it on several occassions . So far it hasn't stalled but it now will not pass inspection.

PORTER HYUNDAI tells her there is no reason it shouldn't read. They offer no solution other than to keep trying different locations. Sorry but sounds like BS to me. :mad:

She has put alot of money into this problem with no positve results and is driving on temporary tags. She has noticed alot of Hyundai's with temporary tags and has stopped to ask others if their problem is similar and so far it is.

Is Hyundai aware of a defect and not willing to fess up or is it a simple answer?

The ecu computer is not reading is the presumed problem. I'll assume you've have the battery hooked up and charged all this time. Frequently this problem is caused by the computer not having enough "drive cycles" to register the emissions readings, but driving around for a few weeks should solve this problem.

So did you unhook the battery, or somehow reset your ecu?

Second, you should verify the problem by doing your own ecu code scan. Take it to Auto Zone or Advance auto for a free code scan, tell them you have a check engine light and they will scan it for free. If they can scan it, you know the emissions station should read it.

Sorry, but I am not privy to her daily driving habits as she doesn't live at home. But she seems to be using the car regularly and has not tampered with the battery or ecu herself.

You're right; If she took it to inspection immediately after having Porter service the car and if they had diconnected the battery it is logical that it was not driven long enough to reset the ecu.

A friend recommended driving at least 50 miles before taking it to the lane. His car was doing the same thing from just sitting(not a Hyundai) and the 50 mile drive worked.

It's the shutting off and sitting that has me wondering if there could still be a short that would reset the ecu everytime she turns off the car?

If the battery is left hooked up then it should be ok. Just tell her to drive for a week or so and see what happens.

To clarify.....

Your SMOG inspection facility is installing scanner to inspect "READINESS TESTS"....

If the car has codes.... as indicated in the first or second line of data as "Number of DTC", it will fail right then and there.. it is polluting.

They been inspecting READINESS TEST completion for a long time, if DTC = "0", and tests is complete, car is operating clean, you pass.

I have access to Hyundai test schedule, but I cannot copy it to get it anywhere..
