I replaced the input speed sensor in my 01 Elantra last month. Ran fine until two weeks ago when it randomly started to downshift to third and stay there until I turned the car off and started it up again which it ran fine until the next occurrence. Today I got a replacement sensor from the seller I bought it from on Ebay. When I installed it, the car was stuck in first gear. Replaced it with the old one and it is fine, until it kicks into third again. It hit me on the highway at 60mph. Do I have two bad sensors, or another issue? Should I avoid Ebay for sensors?

Did you scan the PCM and TCM for DTC first, be better to first see where you are and diag it, rather than "hanging parts" on wild guess..

May have other issues, scan might recover DTC of value.

I would have to go check, but possible update for trans might be available for some conditions..

I actually based my "guess" on what I read on these forums. Someone had an identical problem and said it was an input speed sensor. When I replaced it the first time, it solved that issue.
