THIS IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ACTUALLY SUFFERED A CRITICAL ENGINE MALFUNCTION
(requiring a whole new engine, rebuild, short block install, or anything turbo related).

Please do not vote otherwise(votes are tracked).

  • This covers all engine internals & turbo components only. (things like a/c compressor, alternator, power steering pumps, abs, etc are NOT covered)
  • After voting, please post the approx mileage below.
  • If you know the reason for your engine failure or you feel your engine failure is worth discussing; vote, list the reason below, and start your own thread for more detailed discussions.
  • This is to help track any potential commonality. This is nothing more than an experiment. Its not supposed to prove anything, yet. If this poll yields any results, great. if not - we tried. At worst, we will have a running failure 'ticker'.
Discuss your issues, questions, problems, concerns in any of these threads:

Just placed my vote. My 2014 Santa Fe Sport 2.4L was bad off the line. Day one of a cold crank and it made the noise. The dealer has ordered a new engine. Three weeks to be installed. Manufacture date of 20 NOV 2013.

Replaced Engine

2014 Santa Fe Sport 2.4: Engine made a strange noise from day 1 but the dealership kept telling me it was normal. When I took it in for an oil change 2 months later, they found metal filings in the pan and said they would replace the engine with a new one. Unfortunately "new" meant remanufactured in their vocabulary. Now my gas mileage sucks and they're telling me to go through arbitration if I'm not happy.

Waiting on a new engine right now. 2014 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. Claims to be a wrist pin.
that's kind of a rarity - unless there was a lubrication issue or it wasn't installed correctly - did it make a big racket ?

Shouldn't this poll also include another option such as "no failure" and perhaps an added parameter like within the first 25,000 miles/40,233 km? I just think this would give us better data for analysis.

Same story, but fourth verse. Waiting on new engine right now for 2013 2.0T AWD. Same info received from Dealer as shown above by Chris.f ...... they claim it is a wrist pin issue. Metal in engine oil in month old vehicle with approx. 1,000 miles. Sounded like a "tappet" issue at low idle speed. Dealer says this started in late 2013 when Santa Fe pistons were re-designed, but engines were assembled with older style wrist pins .... the "update notes" for using the new pistons evidently didn't specify using a newer type wrist pin. Early 2014 Santa Fe's were also impacted!

Waiting on a new short block for a SFS 2013 Aug 23, 2013 build date. Wrist pin issue. I got it in early before failure. 6,123 miles bought in 12/2013. Voted.

I think you should add the 3.3L V6 engine to the list, as that engine is used in some regions for the SWB model also...

I don't have the car but the SWB model we have here does have both 2.4L I4 and the 3.3L V6

Sigh. They didnt call the Renault RS01 the "little yellow teapot" for nothing you know. Yes it went off like the *bleep* off the proverbial spade but it brewed up more times than a Sherman tank in northern France. Putting a turbo on an engine to try to get a pint to do the job of a quart is just asking for trouble. It always ends in tears, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but one day there will be a big cloud of white smoke and you'll be standing next to it feeling like a (soon to be very poor) total pillock.

They havent nicknamed the ford version the EcoBoom for nowt...
