hi
the wifes i20 1.4 auto petrol has a very audbile detonation / pre ignition rattle at just under 2k rpm on light and low throttle opening angles, and low loads and on cruise.

this occurs on both 93 ron / 95 ron fuel, the extra 2 points help a little bit but the pre ignition / detonation is still there

i am concerned about long term damage to the engine and is there any fix for this ? recall ? new ecu programming ?
the dealer is stumped, any help appreciated or other owners with a similiar problem please let me know

hi in Cape Town and have a 1.4 manual at similar revs even 2500 in 2nd and 3rd after steady speed then slight opening, almost like its too lean. you only hear it for a couple of seconds and if the window is open. Have you tried an octane booster like Liqui Moly, every couple of tanks? also it is possibly worst when the fuel tank is low?

hi - didnt try an octane booster as that defeats the point
the rattle got progressively worse
1 st dealer diagnosed timing chain tensioner failure - dealer changed it = no result
2 nd dealer diagnosed rattling heatshields or noisy injectors - they changed plenty parts = no result
3 rd hyundai tech services wanted to rebuild the engine at 9k km
the noise got worse and worse and worse and i feared for engine failure from the knocking

drop me an email to nikkivs77 at gmail dot com

for the rest of the story
hyundai did the right thing
