Besides a loose wire or defective sensor does anyone have an experience in regard to the Emission Control Unit warning light flashing along with the fact that the car is sluggish and surging. The user manual tells you to drive it to the nearest Dealer to have the problem pin pointed but before I do that has anyone had a similar experience and is able to suggest the most likely component that is defective? The owners manual says the car can be driven but extended driving may damage the catylitic converter.
Any suggestions?

A flashing engine light is an indication that there is an ignition misfire, often caused by a faulty ignition coil, although there other things that can cause it too. As the manual advises, running the engine with the CEL flashing can damage the expensive catalytic converter in the exhaust.

To fix the problem you need to identify which cylinder it is that is misfiring. The easy way to do that is to connect an OBD scan tool and read the trouble codes. But I assume you don't have one of those or you'd have already done that.

The other way to ID the effected cylinder is by doing a cylinder contribution test. How you do that will depend on what engine we're working with and what type of ignition system it has, which you failed to mention??
