Hyundai has spoken out after reports that it may look to introduce a pickup truck to the U.S. market, completely rejecting the idea. Rumors started earlier in the week when it was reported that the Korean automaker was showing a rebadged version of a Dodge Ram 1500 to focus groups to gauge reaction. The obvious conclusion was that with a recent Chrysler/Nissan deal to share the Ram platform having fallen through, Hyundai could step in – helping it grow even larger in the U.S.
While Hyundai Motor America has yet to reject the claim of showing a rebadged Ram, it did release a statement to the folks at PickupTrucks.com, stating that "Hyundai Motor Co. denies that there are any current plans to bring a pickup truck of any type into the U.S. now or in the foreseeable future. Hyundai is not in discussion with Chrysler in regard to a selling a rebadged Chrysler Corp. pickup truck, or any other vehicle, in the U.S."
That answer is what we expected, with Fiat having made it clear that they are unwilling to let Chrysler work with anyone else. In addition Chrysler and Hyundai recently had a falling out when Fiat took over control of the American automaker and put an end to the joint-venture Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA).
Interestingly, however, both Chrysler and Hyundai are currently working together on commercial vehicles, with the American automaker supplying the hardware for Hyundai's Ram H-100 Wagon in Mexico.
