It's a practical as well as a saftey issue. When parking (or approaching your car to get in) in a street at night, it's nice to be seen, make people driving close by notice there's someone there.
Seems to me it would simply be a matter of re-programming the control chip accordingly. I'll ask next time I am at the dealship.
