Car was recently intermittently losing power down to a crawl and one-time stalled at light. Dealership changed crankshaft position sensor. Next car started occasionally hard shifting. Dealership said I needed a new transmission. Went to transmission specialist, he said it is an electrical problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Transmission fluid has not been changed in 5 years. Both shops advised not to change it right now because will cause worse problems.

Cn you describe the hard shifting a little? Is this a manual or an automatic transmission?

It is an automatic. I'm not sure exactly if it is a hard shift. When I am driving, I feel a pulling back just for a moment and then it lets go. I just assumed that is a hard shift but not really sure. Once it happened twice in quick succession. Sometimes it only happens once a day and sometimes only every 2 or 3 days. They changed the crankshaft position sensor. When it was failing, the car was losing power and when it picked up power, it almost felt the same but since the sensor was changed, it seems to be a lot harder. The spark plugs were changed a couple of years ago. Transmission specialist did not think it was the transmission but was an electrical problem.

Thanks, that helps. Common problems with automatic transmissions that might lead to hard shifting would the TCU (transmission control unit) or possibly old fluid. Do you know the last time the transmission fluid was changed?

I just changed the fluid when all this was happening. But prior to that had been at 130,000 km before which I realize was too long. I'm hoping it works its way through the system and won't happen again. It's very intermittent how often it happens and as far as I know it did not throw up a code on the scanner
