And now the casing broke off, on the freeway, cant retrieve it.

The mirror still functions fine. I imagine no one sells just the plastic shell that goes around the motorized mirror assembly? Would a parts yard maybe be my best bet for replacing this?

Are mirrors much trouble to replace?

You might as well just replace the whole mirror. On ebay they seem to be costing between $30-70. Most likely you'll have to paint it to match also, regardless of where you get it from.
