First oil change was due Saturday so I brought my car in and took along the big 5.25 quart jug of Mobil 1 5w-30.

Just so happened that my car was the one right next to the viewing window, so I decided to watch.

First frustration was that the drain plug was put back in long before all the old oil escaped. I know these techs are under the gun time-wise but I thought for sure he's wait until at least the old oil stream turned into a drip. Instead, he put the drain plug back in when the old oil was still coming out in a thin, solid stream.

Second frustration was that instead of pouring my Mobil 1 from the jug into the engine, he first poured it into a hand-held metal reservoir with a long gooseneck, no doubt for easier handling. But, I highly doubt that metal reservoir was totally empty. It only seems logical that it would have some of the standard shop oil in it from the previous car he did.

The third and final frustration was that my 5.25 qt. jug of Mobil 1 was given back to me with what seems like two Dixie cups of fresh oil left, at most. I should have three-fourths of a quart left over, since an oil and filter change consumes 4.50 quarts, yes? So, no doubt, the next guy in line probably got some of my Mobil 1 just like I probably got some standard shop oil.

It's no major biggie, I guess. I probably have 90% of Mobil 1 in the engine now. Any other consumer who dutifully comes in every 3,000 miles and takes the standard shop oil is going to be just fine, no doubt. But I wanted better stuff in my engine and coming in every 3,000 miles with synth plus my driving patterns is way overkill.

Lesson learned is to just DIY if at all possible.

The first thing is that it's a colossal waste of synthetic oil to change it at 3k. In fact, if you were to do oil analysis, you would find out that synthetic oil is actually INFERIOR to dino oil for the first 3k because it has a high level of detergents in it. New synthetic in your engine has a high level of engine wear particles until the filter has a chance to clean it out... after 3k. Here's a link that supports that. It's complicated and there's lots to read, but it's all there:

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

The second thing is that your owners manual stipulates oil changes every 7500 k, and not 3000 miles. If you leave your oil in there for 7500 you get the benefit of the synthetic while you follow the service schedule and maintain the warranty, save money, and reduce trips to the shop.

Just to demonstrate my point, here's the engine oil analysis I did on my synthetic oil after 17,600 miles. I change my filter every 4k and top up. My oil is unbelievably clean, and my oil analyzer recommended I leave it in there another 10k miles.
Absolutely. No way do I intend to be adhering to a 3K schedule, not with synthetic and not with the type of driving I do. And thanks for posting your oil analysis. Brought back memories of the one I did on my Jetta TDI diesel about 10 years ago. Different animal, of course, but I remember my shock when the results came back even after 9K miles saying "Approved for continued use."

I double you'd get 3/4 quart unfilled. The oil capacity for oil change is "4.86 US qt. (4.6 l)" according to user manual for drain and refill, page 8-4. Oil can be mixed no problem whatsoever. Both oil adheres to SM standard.
Your experience reinforces my insistence of changing oil myself. It is not a matter of saving money. I know I do it right. If I don't, I have only myself to blame.
Thanks for the correction about how much oil it takes for a change.

I do realize Mobil 1 and the shop oil (Castrol SynTec, perhaps?) can be mixed, and I'm definitely not super upset, I just wish I had all Mobil 1 in my engine like I had intended. Instead, I probably still have at least a cupful of the old, nasty stuff that the tech didn't let completely drain out, plus whatever fresh shop oil he mixed with my Mobil 1.

And amen on your final point.

Original Poster back to add Frustration No. 4 to my experience: Checked my oil level this morning and found it at least a quarter inch above the full mark on the dipstick. Sheesh, not only did they not fully drain, but then they overfilled. Or maybe beacuase they didn't fully drain, that's why it's overfilled.

Dude, I'm so dissapointed with you right now. I thought you said in a previous thread that you wanted to do it yourself? Now you have that half-assed job of an oil change. Buddy I live so close to you all you had to do was pm me and we could of got together and did it ourselves. Its alright though, next time you'll know better. :)
First one was a freebie. I couldn't turn down "free"! Although at this point, I probably should have. However, I did get a nice closeup view of what it all looks like under there, thanks to the lift the car was on. Can't really duplicate that on my ramps in the garage.

I have not forgot your kind offer and will defintiely be in touch.
