I'll make it short and sweet. Want everyone's personal opinion. Currently have 235/45-18 tires on my 2015 Sonata Sport 2.0T. WV roads are horrible as some may know. Pot holes, cracks, patches all add up to a crappy ride. Ready for new tires. Either going to upgrade to 245/45 tires or drop down to a 17" wheel and go with stock tire size. By staying with an 18" wheel and going up in tire size I gain about 0.3" of sidewall height but save money with not having to buy new wheels.

By dropping down a wheel size, I get access to cheaper tires in the future and a greater sidewall height. From anyone's experience or expertise, is it worth going the extra money to drop down to 17" wheels or is the gain not worth the cost? I am just tired of the low profile sidewalls which result in knots and rough riding.

  • Vehicle history can be good. How many miles. If not bought new, how many have you put on it.
  • Describe the problem best you can. If a noise can you get a sound or video file
  • Tell us what has been done, if anything, thus far. If tests have been performed give actual results not OK or passed. If scanned for codes the actual code(s) not O2 sensor or MAF, Etc.
  • If the vehicle has been to a repair facility it would be nice if you could post a picture of that invoice/bill
  • If your vehicle is under warranty you should have the dealer check it out. If it's a problem they see many times they will generate a safety recall of TSB. This is how they know of the problem.

This information can save a lot of time and get you the answers you need much faster.

Thank you for the welcoming and the information. Not my first forum I've been on by far. I did update my profile some but didn't think I needed to update much since the majority of my question is generic and not car or model specific. I do know I cannot be exact, but if I went to 17" wheels I would use stock 17" tire size which should be nearly exact on the speedometer. My main question is if dropping a wheel size is more beneficial for protection against rough roads or if going up a tire size on same 18" wheels provides the same level of protection.

This info is wrong. The vehicle speed readout and shift points are based on tire diameter/circumference, not the wheel size. You can put any size wheels you want on (provided the clearance is there for brakes and suspension) as long as the overall tire size is the same as stock and the speedometers will be just as accurate.
Do the smaller wheel, taller sidewall. Your ride will be smoother and tires will be cheaper.

Thank you, I am really leaning towards smaller wheel and stock tire size for that wheel size but do not want to incur the extra cost if the benefits are negligible.

Im in a 2017 2.0T Sport, factory wheels and tires are 235/45/18 (overall diameter is about 26.3 "), I just replaced my tires at 50,000 and went up to 245/45/18 (increased overall diameter to 26.8) soi I ganed about 0.25" of sidewall.

On my car it corrected the slight speedo error from stock and I feel no difference in acceleration. Ride is a little better IMO dont feel grooves in freeway rtc. But that may also be due to tire choice.

As long as your overall diameter is below 27" and above 26.25" so there is no more than a 0.5" change it will not throw off the speedo enough to worry about. The added 0.25" of sidewall makes a difference IMO.

its a lot less money than new wheels and you still keep the sportier look. The Sonata with 16" and 17' wheels all are about 26.25 diameter tires

Dropping the rim size is a good start....find some 17" knock offs and use quality tires.
Sell your 18"s
Use the OE recommended tire size for 17's 215/55/17 or close enough diameter equivalent like 235/50-17

I went from 19's to 18's on my SUV and dont regret it. My Sonata runs 16" wheels and I wouldnt bling rim it on these graded roads.

I’m currently in the same boat, I know all sizes and blah but what I’m curious about is how much if at all will it affect my handling and overall feel of the vehicle going from the low pro 18 down to a 17?
I tried going bigger sidewall on the 18s an it just made it feel to “floaty” an not really grippy An stiff, I’m sick of buying new tires due to potholes so I was thinking of 17s myself but don’t want to sacrifice overall look and handling

^ is a good resource for comapring sizes and seeing any potential impact to your speedometer. Keeping same wheels and upping tires will give you 0.1" more sidewall. Dropping to 17" wheels will give you more sidewall than that. To keep traction/steering feeling the same with a 235 wide tire gives you a 235/50R17 tire which results in 0.4" more sidewall. If you go with the other OEM wheels/tire setup, you get a skinnier tire and so the feel of "sporty" driving will be less but give you 0.5" more sidewall.

I'm a little late to the party, but the old idea that lower profile tires means a harsher ride is outdated. The harshness of the ride has far more to do with the tires design/construction that the size of the sidewall these days. I've got up in wheel size (shorter sidewall) a number of times in the last 20 years and never encountered a harsher ride. My wife, who is decidedly NOT an enthusiast (wouldn't trade ride for looks or performance) noted a couple of times that the ride actually improved.

I have two sets of wheels and tires for my current daily driver (BMW 325i wagon). The 17" wheel/tire package rides NOTICEABLY worse than the 18" wheel/tire package. It's in the tire design. You cannot just make the simple assumption that larger sidewall will mean a better ride.

Best bet is to read the on-line reviews of tires with ratings from actual users. I've never been disappointed doing that.

Also late to the party but my 2 cents. If you’re going to smaller wheel, assuming brake caliper clearance, go with the 55 or 60 series tires. While I just purchased a Santa Fe my daily ride is a VW GTI. The stock 18” wheel/40 series tires are rough on the winter roads. I run a 16”, 55 series, all-season performance tire for an extended winter (Oct-May) and save the low profile tire/wheels for summer driving (after pot-hole repairs!)
