I need to replace the C/V on a 94 Elantra and just wanted to make sure the axle just slides out from the trans.

It takes a bit of effort to get the axle out - Hyundai's shop manual recommends careful use of a pry bar. You don't want to dig it in too far otherwise you'll tear up the axle seal.

There is a retainer ring on the end of the axle that will need to be replaced when you are re-installing.

Yes Gordo, that is correct, however the new or re-conditioned driveshaft should come with a new retainer clip on it.
You will also be required to remove the gearbox oil so that it doesn't end up all over you and your floor.
However you can always remove the driveshaft and then plug the hole with a rag, whilst you quickly grab the other shaft.

Remember to place the CV joint into the gearbox carefully, you don't want to tear or split that driveshaft seal!

Good Luck!
