I don't know the details I'm afraid. That said, alloy refurbishment in the UK costs about UK£30 per wheel for a finish that is imperceptible from original factory finish. I thought the repair was pretty involved, including rubbing down the wheel and filling the damaged section, matching the colour perfectly then lacquering the alloy.
You could always swap the spare for the damaged wheel if the sight of it is bothering you that much, and a brand new alloy crops up on Ebay for £40 regularly so sure it will be the same if not cheaper, on your side of the pond.
Chalk it up to one of those annoyances!
