Cruise Control Will Only Set With Headlights Off

1838 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  DSHornet
Hello All,

No idea if the two are related, but I recently changed a tail light and since then, I can only set my cruise control when my headlights are turned off. Also, my ESP OFF indicator light is always on, and the switch does not toggle it. I'm not the greatest with wiring schematics, and before I pop the steering column and take a look, I was wondering if anyone has heard of an issue like this or seen it before. I have checked all relevant fuses, and I don't think fuses would be the problem since the cruise control is getting power. I can set it just fine when the lights are off. Help!! Thanks in advance for any help!

Right there you answered your question...

Did you install the proper bulbfor application, and did you install bulb properly to socket ?? Did yo note the 2 pins on the base of the bulb that 1 is high and the other is low... this is to insure the filaments get put on correct circuit (note the hi/low slots in the socket).......

Turn on the lights, and walk to back of car and look.... is 1 bright and other dim ?? I bet if you turn lights off and step on pedal, do the dash lights illuminate ?

When you turn lights on, the crossed circuit send power back up the brake circuit, thus canceling out the cruise because cruise thinks you stepped on brake pedal, as brake light circuit is input to cruise to cancel...

Also, my ESP OFF indicator light is always on, and the switch does not toggle it.
Same as above, ESC is being driven nuts by the back feed... you'll likely have code now, so visit to dealer to have ESC/ABS scanned and cleared of fault codes, and CAN COMM codes...

sbr711,

Thanks a million! That got it. Looks like I replaced the stop light with the wrong bulb. I bought the correct one, changed it, and all is well. Thanks again for the help!!
