I recently bought a 2ltr diesel 2003. It started ok when I first bought it but when the cold kicked in recently I have been having starting problems and I can only start it with easy start. I have had the glow plugs changed today but it has the same problem so was not that.

The key fobs also never worked when I purchased and have changed the battery recently. It was about this time that the cold weather settled in and I had problems starting so I am not sure whether it could be that or it is coincidental. I guess I am suspecting some kind of immobilizer kicking in and stopping the fuel. I think I also had it cut out on me once but it may have been that I stalled it as it was pulling of at a roundabout - felt strange at the time and had a little trouble starting it.

The car has problems in starting up on its own whether it is cold or warm.

This is doing my head in and cannot keep using easy start.

Please can anyone help

My mechanic thinks it may be injectors or a pump problem. May turn out to be an expensive purchase.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Has anyone heard of the Santa Fe's immobilizer causing it not to start but is ok after easy start. Sounds strange but I read another post on another forum that suggested that this happened to another person.

I am from the UK if that helps. The car is currently sitting outside, as i drove the car home from the mechanics without them diagnosing the problem - it cut out on me twice and now the 'Check' light has come on.

I guess a visit to the dealers is necessary.

Has anyone heard of an immobilizer system that cuts the fuel intermittently - I still have a hunch that it could be something to do with putting new batteries into a key fob (which now doesn't work at opening the doors or alarm now). It was at this time everything started going wrong (the cold weather had also started coming in at this time.)

Am I going mad?

Hi,
I just bought a 2003 Santa Fe and had a sdimilar problem although it would start when cold it would then cut out, I had the airflow sensor changed and that seems to have improved the problem.

I'm speaking from total ignorance here because I've never owned a diesel engine vehicle, but I'm wondering about something.

When I was in the Air Force and living in base housing in a cold part of the States, we had fuel oil furnaces to warm our units. The base Civil Engineers (who maintained the buildings on the base) mixed a small amount of jet fuel, which is little more than kerosene with some special additives, with the fuel oil for the heaters. It seems that the fuel oil would get very thick and congeal at low temperatures so the fuel pumps in the furnaces wouldn't pull it from the tank very well. When the weather warmed up again, they would come around and put more oil in the tanks so the percentage of kerosene would be less because there was a problem with using it in other than low temperatures.

Is there a diesel fuel additive that can be used for the same purpose in a car?

Yes someone did mention that it could be that the diesel gets thicker in cold weather - you may have something there.

Hello

I am new in here.
Did not know about this forum before now. If I had known about it earlier I would indeed have posted my problem here.
I have excactly the same problem as described here.
I have a 2002 Santa Fe diesel and real problem with cold starts. As soon as the temperature is below 0 deg the problem starts.
When its not too cold I can often manage to get the engine start by letting it run on the starter long enough for it to start.
It tries to start several times but if I get it run on the starter it finnaly start.
That is if its not TOO cold....
If it gets colder even that does not work.
When it eventually starts it seems to start on 3 cylindres...thats a scary thought.

I have had the dealer look at it several times and first time they said they had an error code from 2 of the injectors.
They were replaced and they were VERY expensive.. !!
Then the next time they looked at the car they said that they now had an error code on the 3rd injector.
It is now also replaced.
So 3 of 4 injectors are replaced.
Still the same problems.

I will let another Hyundai dealers mechanics look at it now and let me hear they opinion.
I thought it might be the glow plugs but I am not sure now after reading the posting here.

Maybe its a computer problem.
Someone wrote in another tread that this was a known problem with the early Santa Fe and it was because the computer was too cold.
They just kicked the computer and the car started.
I will try this tomorrow.

We currently got -20 deg here now.....and the car completely refused to start today.

no member has yet to mention this.........although you may well have had the glow plugs changed, has anyone checked to make sure there is power going to them? and if there is power how long is the relay staying switched on to allow the glow plugs to heat up?

on a side note, you should only use 'easy start' in an emergentcy, once you start to use it constantly your engine will 'need it like a drug junky'

Yes I have suspected the heating of the glow plugs from the beginning.
Although when I mentioned it for the mechanics they refused that this could be the problem.
I will go to another dealer and check with them.
Is there anyway I can check myself if they have power ?

I see the glowing light in the dashboard gets on and after a few seconds off but does this really prove that the glowing is working ?
Is the indicator really measuring the temperature on the glow plug itself ?

get a test light, one end to a glow plug, the other end to ground/earth. switch on the ignition and the test light should come on and it should stay on for at least 5-10 seconds

My yellow 'check' light has now come on and has stalled on me a few times - what is going on?

Hello I have same problem with my 2.0 diesel 02 mod, sombody talk about a computer, where is this computer box?? I engine room or in cabin?

Well if the check engine light has come on, the computer has thrown and logged a fault code. Have the OBDII system scanned and it will tell you what the fault code is and will give you a baseline on how to go about fixing the problem.

If the weather is cold enough, you should be adding some HEET to your fuel. Perhaps also query the fuel station where you get your diesel as to if they're selling a winter-grade or is it the same grade they sell in the summer? Not to sure how it works in the UK, but here in Canada, winter diesel is much thinner due to the cold factor. Summer diesel can be used to put a fire out if the temperature is cold enough.

Also might want to look at having a block heater installed, if there isn't one.

A trick I've used with diesels in the past, as well. Turn the key on, and wait till the glow-plug light turns off, turn key off, and repeat. In extreme cold, repeat this 3-4 times to get your upper cylinders warm before cranking over so that the fuel has a fighting chance to ignite. Diesels do not have spark plugs, and simply fire on engine compression. As a result, a fuel that already has a hard time burning in the cold will have an even harder time on initial start-up if the cylinders are not warm enough to create an ideal firing situation.

A quick update everyone all fixed:

It was the fuel pump leaking er fuel and not giving enough pressure to the injectors. A new one would have cost £650 to replace, so we opted for them to have a go at putting new seals in which cost £70.

Anyway - luckily that seemed to sort the pump out - the garage then diagnosed one of the injectors to be playing up - £350+VAT+labour at £100 an hour (almost feinted). Opted for them to overhaul it at a bargain price of £90. He said that should pretty much sort it. All working brilliantly so far so no immobilizer probs. All covered under a waranty which cost them £265 (would have done work up to £500.)

Happy man.

Thanks a lot everyone and hopefully the topic has helped others problems too.

Thanks for updating your solution. That in itself will be a help to anyone with a similar problem. They may be able to provide a suggestion or two to their mechanic, or know where to look if they're more mechanically inclined themselves. :) Glad it didn't cost you a mortgage payment to get it running well again. :)
