2015 XL/LWB... towing a pop-up trailer. With BSD on or off, after a bit of time the blind spot detection system seems to go haywire and will repeatedly (think: strobe light!) start flashing "BSD Cancelled" on the cluster display. I usually tap the BSD button on the left of the dash and the "Return" symbol button on the steering wheel until it stops flashing, when it then just shows the triangle/exclamation error symbol.
Anyone know if this is a bug, or, if it's normal due to the trailer at a constant distance from the rear bumper causing the sensors to malfunction?
It'd be pretty much impossible to replicate on a short 2 minute test drive w/ the dealer, plus I'd have to be towing my trailer to do the test.

Well, the trailer driving the system bonkers makes sense. Even though it is behind your vehicle it may be detected at times and if it happens often enough the system would probably think it has a fault and start displaying warning messages. I am surprised that it would do this with the system turned off. One would think that the entire system would be shut down, but perhaps the switch only disables the notifications and the system itself remains active. That would explain the warning messages.

Knowing how the manufacturers release info about these systems.....Poorly in many cases....I doubt the average Dealer would know the answer to your question. We do have a few savvy people and Techs who monitor this forum and hopefully one of them will chime in with the answer.

Would any dealer just do it free, or is it a service bulletin and not a recall /mandatory update?

SUBJECT: BLIND SPOT DETECTION (BSD) SOFTWARE UPDATE

Description:

When towing a trailer with some LF/LF-HEV/LF-PHEV Sonatas or some AN/NC Santa Fe vehicles equipped with the Blind Spot Detection (BSD) feature, the trailer may interfere with the BSD system operation resulting in cancellation of the BSD operation.

When this occurs, a “BSD canceled” message is displayed in the vehicle’s instrument cluster. The “BSD canceled” message remains on even if the customer manually disables the BSD system, and may result in customer complaints.

This bulletin provides the service procedure to update the system software to turn off the “BSD canceled" message when the BSD system is manually disabled.

Applicable Vehicles (Below Vehicles Equipped with BSD):

2015-2017 Sonata (LFA)

2016-2017 Sonata Hybrid/Plug-in (LF HEV/PHEV)

2013-2017 Santa Fe Sport (AN)

2013-2016 Santa Fe (NC)

ah, crap. mobile layout didn't show that. carry on.
No worries. I'll bring in the post above and see what they say in a few weeks at our first service appt since buying it from the dealer (used w/ 42k km's).
Thanks a lot for the help - good to know it's not an unknown flaw!
