I bought new brake pads and had a place put them in some time this January, and they are still squeeking. I don't notice them squeeking on the interstates, but they do squeek half of the time in town. I don't remember what the milage was when I had the break pads put in, but I think I put somewhere around 5,000-10,000 miles on these new brake pads already since I got them. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Lots of variables

Did they just put the pads on old friction surface (not resurface rotor faces).. normal friction sounds or pads worn out that wear sensor drags, does noise stop if you touch brake pedal ?

Pads stuck in mounts and drag to premature wear out, sensors drag and make noise..

Excessive rust and pad friction as working

Need a visual inspect as to condition of pad material thickness, rotor face condition,,, squeels are kinda trivail, unless it stops with pedal application,,,,, grind/hashing is of more concern.

Got pictures ?

lol, I have no idea what you are talking about, I'm not very mechanical. I don't have any pics to show. The pad is a regular one... one of the brands of the ceramic type. I bought it from Advanced Auto store, and had a place put it in, and so I don't know the brand of the pads. I'm thinking that it just has some dust in it still because from breaking it in, and the dust hasn't been blown out of it yet.... which if it is, I'm not sure how to remove it.

why did you even ask if the squealing stop if I touch the brake pedal?, If you read my response, of course the noise didn't stop. I said in the post that it squeals when I brake, and so therefore it doesn't stop if I touch the brake, it only squeals when I brake.

Did you purchase pads or shoes? Is the noise coming from the front or rear. This problem is more common with drum brakes.

I bought new pads. This didn't happen until I had the new pads put on. I dunno... it could be just the type of pads b/c I bought them at Advance Auto, which are a cheaper kind than the OEM brand from the hyundai dealer. But all I know is that next time I get brake pads I'm going to get OEM from hyundai and not even mess with brake pads anywhere else.

Disk brakes usually have a small amount of contact between the pads & rotors even when there's no pressure on the brake pedal, this light contact can cause a squeal (or squeak if the rotor isn't perfectly symmetrical in alignment and thickness). When you press the pedal momentarily, that pressure change on the pad/rotor assembly can be enough to momentarily stop the squeal or squeak. That's the reason for that type of question.

Another condition can cause the squeak/ squeal when you step on the brake pedal - I'm assuming this is what you have.

Not knowing what your mechanic saw and how he "repaired" the brakes on your car makes it hard to give you a definitive diagnosis on what your current problem is, but here are some things I'd look for:

  • Physical condition of the rotor - is it grooved, straight, etc.?
  • Was the glaze removed? The old pads would have left a layer of glaze on your rotors that could cause this noise if the glaze wasn't removed.
  • What brand & quality of parts were used? Some pads are notorious for causing a squeal even though there's nothing physically wrong with the installation or any components.
  • Were all the moving parts of the caliper properly lubricated. Some calipers (like Hyundai's) are notorious for seizing partially causing asymmetrical brake clamping - this can cause a squeal because there is no clamping but only a push by the "piston pad" on one side of the rotor.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, your assumption is correct, it only squeaks when I press on the brake pedal. I don't remember what brand of brake pads I bought at Advanced, but I do know that it is definitely not Akebono (I know that I didn't pick this one b/c of it's completely ceramic and really quiet brakes doesn't stop as good), or the Economy Brake pad set, or any of the steel, so I can rule those out... so maybe it's the Wagner ThermoQuiet, it's the only one left that Advanced Auto carries that fits the car.
I have no idea if all of the moving parts were lubricated because I had a professional mechanic put them on.
