Started 2021 Calligraphy this morning, it immediately died and all warning lights came on dash. Pushed button again, it started, but again all warning lights came on, and there was a message about checking forward collision warning, EPB, and I think another. Drove to a different spot a few feet away, restarted with same results - engine started then immediately died, started up the second time with all warning lights illuminated. Auto Hold, cruise, driver assistance buttons non-responsive and all lit up amber on the cluster.

This went on a few more times, then one time only the engine light was amber. I checked the gas cap, no issue, retightened to be sure. Engine light still on, but at least it started and continued running. I ran it through the car wash to be sure nothing like dust, etc would be contributing to the issue.

Called dealer. No appointments available until MAY - like 5-6 weeks to look at it. No loaner or rental cars available. Might be able to look at it within a week if I drop it off and they work it in as an emergency. Called other dealerships in the area, same or worse scheduling but way more indifferent attitudes.

I've seen the same issue in posted in the Kia Carnival and Hyundai Tuscon forums, and some have had to replace the engine. I can't imagine that would be a quick process. And I don't have another vehicle and would not given a loaner or rental to use. I'm seriously considering trading this thing for a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, or something reliable with an actual service department before the lights come back on and/or I'm stranded somewhere in a 9 month old vehicle with 6000 miles on it.

I'll upload or post a link to the videos I recorded of the issues.

Here's the message I got from Bluelink:
A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected with your 2021 SANTA FE (VIN....) on 03/22/2022 at 11:43 am CDT. A full system check is recommended to be done when convenient. Use the MyHyundai app or visit www.myhyundai.com to schedule an appointment with your preferred dealer.

I tried topping off the gas tank, and that seems to have reset everything including the engine light for right now.

Now that there are no lights on, anyone know if they would be able to diagnose the issue, or would I be out a vehicle for a week, then charged $160 for them to look at it and find nothing wrong?

Anyone else have this happen? What did you do and what was the result?

So frustrated...

This is my only vehicle and I sincerely want to know if others have experienced this and hear their advice. I think if someone has had this issue, they will know and be able to respond without me posting proof. The videos are too large to upload so I will try to link to my Google or OneDrive.

I apologize if my frustration over the service process made my post sound like I was trying to defame the SF... (as an aside...wouldn't most of this community already own one anyway?)

As far as service appointment availability, I posted exactly what they told me. If anyone would like contact info: (512) 920-5397 Round Rock Hyundai and 512-893-6900 South Point Hyundai.

To be clear: I'm definitely NOT bluffing nor trying to defame anything. I've been a huge advocate for Hyundai.

I chose this vehicle b/c I had a 2015 Genesis sedan that was awesome, gave me no issues. This Santa Fe had most of the same features but in an SUV which I need now.

Stay tuned if you care, or not.

thanks all!

yes, after I filled up the gas tank, it seems to be A-OK. I drove around town around 6 miles or so.
It does take a little while for the fuel system evap and pressure sensors to come back to a normal reading. Just like if you get lower air pressure in your tire and add air, it will take a few miles to get it to stop alarming. If the tank wasn't full, then it probably wasn't an evap issue but a loose cap, but again that will take a while for the computer to figure out once the tank pressurizes.

I had to also schedule a few weeks out as my local dealer is also backed up too...seeing you're in Austin, did you try Steele Hyundai in Kyle? Going south towards San Antonio, there are way more dealers too.

Go by an Auto parts store and see if they will check your codes. Actually call first so you don't make an exausting trip for nothing.

What kind of evidence do you require? You really can’t be serious!

If possible, I think some pictures or video indicating issue would be nice.. at least to have dealer/mechanic know what happen. Say dealer runs diagnoses with scanner tool and finds nothing? I hope thread starter have screenshot from blue link app to tell there was condition for engine system control unit.

Things to do if someone ever ran into such issue:

1. Take photo, video of symptoms.

2. Check VIN at Hyundai website and nhtsa for recall. 2021 SF had issues (some batches from Q2, 21 yr) which I recall from old threads.

3. Just go to dealer to report the issue and for inspection instead of calling them.. talk to someone who is in charge (manager or supervisor).. it's just one year old vehicle.. how can dealership give such long wait.

Odd that the fault disabled the car briefly. Certainly keep your appointment but likely just an ECU reset to resolve whatever the computer related issue was. Fingers crossed.

Check the VIN to know if there is recall against your vehicle.. still hard to believe what you saying and no help from dealership.

I have at least one video from yesterday morning showing the entire sequence - starting, engine dying immediately, then starting and staying on, all warning lights and messages, buttons not working, etc. Another shows only the engine light on, and a third with the lights off after refueling. I plan to share with the dealer when I get there since I know they can't diagnose what they can't see.

VIN has no open recalls.

I was told that long waits are due to being understaffed. No loaners/rentals are due to backlog of customers waiting for their vehicles to be repaired.

Good idea - I tried calling Steele yesterday but was put on hold and accidentally disconnected, then work got in the way. I'll try them again to see if they have better availability. I'm in Round Rock so they still are not too far.

This is actually what concerns me the most - if the auto cruise and sensors don't work, that sucks 1% of the time. If the vehicle dies and/or won't start, that sucks 100% of the time.

thanks!

You gotta be kidding, right? He/she is not on trial here. We are here to help ! Post evidence? As if the person is lying? Bluffing?

I had the same issue. I was accelerating and the it hesitated big time and sent it to limp mode. Turned out to be the throttle body sensor. I think there was issue since I had bought because it runs a lot better I noticed since it was fixed. Regardless you need to check the code to get an idea of what caused it.

Ugh, I hate to even tell my story.
This exact scenario happened to me a year ago with my late 2020 Calligraphy while out of town on vacation. Just as you mentioned, hit the starter and the dashboard goes all Christmas lights and I get warnings from front end collision and side impact collision warnings. Then the car just dies. Dead. Forever. I had it towed to a local dealership and they couldn't get it to read anything off the diagnostics computer. Car was so dead even the wheels locked up. Lucky for me I called Hyundai Assurance as the car wasn't even a month old and under 5K mileage. They were helpful in getting me home and into a loaner. Once home the dealership with my car still had no idea what was going on. They had their "best guy" and then their regions "best guy" look at the car...nothing. after a week of sitting out of town, my local dealer and Hyundai Assurance agreed to tow it back to my home town to have the local guys check it out. Well, their "best guy" and regional "best guy" had no clue. Could be a fuse, nope. Could be a fuse buss, nope. Could have been a lightening strike, nope. Nothing added or replaced made this car ever light up again.
After 6 months of mystery problems and driving a new loaner every 2-3 weeks, Hyundai agreed that the car was a lost cause and lemoned it and paid me and the loan off. As of last week the car is still sitting in the parking lot of my local dealership as Hyundai corporate wont take the car until its in working condition...un-real!
My warning...call Hyundai Assurance, Get above the local guys. HA will push the dealership to get the car in and looked over. Do it before you get stranded out of town like I did.

Sounds like you haven’t heard how terrible Hyundai and Kia dealers can be.

Do you honestly think the OP is just making this up for the **** of it?

Wow, these stories of this issue AND the fact they could not get to the first poster's vehicle until May are worrisome. Sounds like Hyundai is having some real quality issues if there are so many they can't even get to it for over a month and a half. Plus as AmyLynn 254 stated hers they couldn't even fix. Wow! I hope and pray my 2021 Elantra doesn't start to have real issues. They did have to replace the fuel pump in the tank 2 weeks after I bought the car but nothing since really except after updating my Navigation software (which I didn't realize was going to update the auto software too) my Smart Trunk function disappeared. They could not longer find the enable/disable in the settings under doors or anywhere. It did fix two things I really like and that is no longer having to plug phone in to left usb port to utilize Carplay and the auto headlight dim function now works. I am going to wait until the next Navigation update comes out in April or May and see if they put it back. I don't miss it much as my hands are only full on rare occassions and it was irratating when I would walk behind car in garage to get tools it would open and also if I locked the doors upon getting gas at QT Station because I preferred to leave the car at the pump and walk up and pay it would open while I was pumping gas so I did not want to leave it with them for who knows how long seeing as the dealership is 49miles away. They wanted me to leave it so they could call Hyundai Tech Support and find out what was going on.

Sadly some overzealous members think everyone in the world is out there to slander Hyundai ! I recall the early complainers of DCT issue being attacked, called as trolls etc. but when the deluge of complaints started across the models on multiple boards they had no other recourse to but believe that there could really be an issue. Also, the dealer staffing issues is well known . I live in DC metro area with a Hyundai dealer every 25-30 miles and yet the closest appointment date for a routine service was 3 weeks when i tried scheduling one in Jan.
