I currently have the stock 16 x 6.5 alloy rim. I plan to put on 225/50/16. Stock tire size is 205/55/16. The price difference for 205's to 225's isn't much more imo. Plus i'm pretty sure it'll make a difference in handling.

Would I have any clearance issues? I don't think I would, because the stock 17" use 215's, but that rim has a different offset as well.

I have the 225X17's and no problems at all. Car seems to handle a little better and has much better grip.

Not 16's, but I did go up from a 215/45R/17 on 6.5" rims to a 215/50R/17 and have ample clearance. Smoother ride, too. More sidewall to absorb those irritating little bumps in the highway.

I run 225/40R18 on my sedan. No issues, significant improvement in responsiveness and grip.

+1... 225/45r17s on the track. Fun, and the stance is awesome. I may go back to 215s tho, for weight savings - the 225s aren't that much better.

I wouldn't run 225s on 16s either - bubble city!

Okie, how did that affect your speedometer?
I am considering doing a similar approach on my GT with 16's. My speedometer is pretty code at the moment, maybe 1 mph fast.

Walt, I was about 1.5-2 MPH on the low side. "IF" those digital speed signs in neighborhoods and highways that register your travel rate can be trusted. Been through about 6 of them in different locations, same speed, all read the same.

The move up to the 50R has brought me, pretty much, right in line to what the speedo is reading. I have been looking for one of those digital signs since getting the tires last Friday! Can't locate one when I need one.

Decided I'm just going to stick with a 205 tire. The tires I want are hankook ventus v12 evo. I've used these in the past, and loved them.

I checked tire racks specs for weight. 225/50/16 weighs 24lb per tire. 205/55/16 weighs 20lb per tire. 4lbs per tire is a lot imo.

I still have lots of time to decide, since I'm not buying these until spring time rolls around.

probably the best idea! Another thing to consider is 215s on a wheel with less offset to change the stance.

I got a great deal on some 245/40/18. I know my speedo will be 3,26% off. I will be going slower than my speedometer says.

Will it fit though? They are on 18x8,5 mags.

It was on a mazdaspeed3!

I used the search function here and on the MD forum and noting came up. Someone put some 235/40/18 on his GT and it looked alright and had enough clearance to even go a little bit bigger in my opinion. Here's the picture :

Thanks a lot guys, I love reading your responses! :)
