Hi guys.......
i am the owner of 2000 Hyundai Lantra wagon.The most recent problem that occur with my car , has been a faulty oxygen sensor that caused the "check engine" light to come on. The dealer was apologetic and helpful when dealing with the problem.

We had an engine light two days after a tune-up at the local dealership. - 2002 Elantra VE sedan.

For a day or so the car would down-shift for no apparent reason and then the engine started over-revving and the automatic transmission would not shift out of second gear. That's when the engine light came on.

After having the car towed in, the diagnosis was an arc-ing spark plug wire.

The mechanic said this would have caused the engine light to come on and all the problems as well. Warranty covered the tow.

Seems to be fine now

Well - another trip back to the dealer - similar problem, over-revving, shifting at the wrong times, can't use higher gears and now stalling and hesitating.

Dealer has now replaced the throttle position sensor - hoping this works.

Does this seem to be a common problem?

The serpentine belt (runs the water pump and a few other things) on my 1998 Elantra Wagon just let go and the engine overheated. It was an easy repair (not a dealer) but the engine light came on and stayed on, despite the repair. The engine is running fine but the light was still on even after a couple thousand more trouble-free kms. For some reason the light went off when I let the gas tank run almost dry. It has stayed off since. Don't know what that means but it might be an easy way to get the pesky light off without a dealer visit.

I have a 1997 hyundai elantra gls, check engine light goin on constantly, trouble codes indicate i think oxygen sensor problems, will find out on tuesday, droppin her off at the mechanics, car has 143000 miles on it

Ed, a code can be set for an overheated engine, as for it being cleared by letting the gas tank get close to empty, I can't explain that

1998 elantra se here! Check engine light goes on and off at will....no real problems with car....mechanic brother in law hooked it up to the diagnostics and said it was sumthin to do with the o2 sensors staying stuck open or closed....my car even passed an emission test with an engine light on so no big deal if its an o2 problem!

It's hard to believe you passed with an o2 sensor code considering it has to do with emissions. If you having a code with it just replace it.

don't forget the Gas Cap... it can cause the Check Engine light too.
Fixed mine...although if it comes back on in a few days, I'll repost. But as I understand it this is a very common root cause (and cheap to fix).
