2013 rear brake pad replacement question

514 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Johns2.0T
Replacing rear rotors and pads on my 2013. I noticed that the new pad does not have the alignment pin that fits in the notch of the caliper piston. Is this vital to the function of the rear brakes? Did a google search about this pin purpose and it sounded like it was necessary to keep the piston from rotating when using the parking brake. Has anyone installed rear pads without this pin and had any issues with the parking brake or brake function?

The brake kit was ordered on Amazon and was highly rated so I would really like to get the brake job done today and not have to wait for a mfr reply about the issue on Monday (called their customer support line and of course they are not working on the weekend :mad: )

Picture below shows the oem pad on left with the alignment pin in green circle. New pad on right is missing the pin in red circle area.

Yeah, I agree that it is the wrong part or just not manufactured to the OEM specification because overall physical dimensions matched the OEM pad perfectly. I found this very informative Lexus shop manual section about how combination rear disc brake / hand brake operation works. This is the setup we have on my 2013 Elantra. Seems that without that pin in the pad backing, the caliper piston could rotate as you set / release the parking brake which would possibly cause brake drag or out of adjustment on brakes.

So here is the official reply from the Brake kit mfr over my questioning of the rear pads not having the alignment pin:

"From what we are able to see, many replacement pads for the rear do not necessarily have the pin, as it is an optional feature. We can confirm you were sent the correct parts for this vehicle based on the image you provided, as the correct pad for a 2013 Hyundai Elantra is brake pad 1848. However, if you are dissatisfied with these parts, Amazon should provide you with a label to return your full order if a return request is created, and we’ll be able to offer you a refund for the parts received in good condition. "

The Amazon return policy on this brake kit is not ideal. Since the parts were drop shipped from the mfr whse and not an Amazon whse on original order, the return process is not very friendly. I need to get an RMA from mfr to initiate the return. I have to pay for return shipping and then they will decide whether to reimburse my shipping cost upon their inspection of the returned parts. I really didn't want to go down that road so I just ended up ordering a set of Raybestos pads that have the pins on them and use the brake rotors from the original kit.

So I go back to my original question for our expert forum users - I am sure many here have replaced rear pads. Did you install any pads without the alignment pins and did that cause any issue with the rear disc brake / parking brake function? I have a 2012 Elantra I could use these on in probably a year.
