2013 Elantra post-mortem, shavings in CVVT/oil control valves

So I'm swapping an engine in my stepson's 2013 Elantra sedan. The motor developed a nasty piston slap/knock (and apparently it's a thing in the piston skirt coatings of Hyundai Nu engines) so that was the reason for the swap. In pulling the CVVT/Oil control valves, I found pretty nasty metal shavings in the screens of the valves. Oddly enough, nothing came out in the pan. I didn't cut the oil filter open, but I guess I should to check before I send the motor off as a core.

Anyone else come across this? I assume it's just a byproduct of the engine design? I wonder if it would be a good 'check' to yank the two CVVT/OCVs occasionally to check for metal debris.

It's the 1.8 Nu engine. Not a lot out there online. The replacement engine's are pretty clean except for some very small debris. I'm just going to assume it was a byproduct of the failure.
