DETROIT • Hyundai is recalling Sonata and Azera sedans in cold-weather states because road salt can corrode the rear suspension. The manufacturer also is recalling about 23,000 Santa Fe Sport SUVs because an axle can fail, causing the car to lose power. The recalls affect 215,000 Sonata midsize sedans from the 2006 to 2010 model years, 24,000 Azera full-size sedans from 2006 to 2011, and 23,000 Santa Fe Sport 2013 models with front-wheel-drive and 2.4 liter, four-cylinder engines.
Hyundai says salt can corrode the rear suspension crossmember in the sedans, which is part of the vehicle's frame. In advanced cases, the crossmember could detach from the control arms that lead to the wheels, which could affect wheel alignment and increase the risk of a crash.
Hyundai will inform owners next month. Dealers will inspect the cars and repair or replace the defective parts.
The recall affects vehicles registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
The Santa Fe models affected by the recall were built between July 11, 2012 through March 12 of this year.
Hyundai says the right axle shaft can fail in rare cases. If that happens, the SUVs can lose power or roll away if parked on a slope. The company says it's not aware of any crashes or injuries linked to the defect.

Owners are being notified by letter. Dealers will replace the axle shaft free of charge.

Are the axle shafts on the 2.0T models different than the 2.4?

The axles are the same in the 2.0T as the 2.4L. I just got off the phone with the Hyundai parts department. My wife will be making a trip today to show them we're not crazy :)

Anyone know anything about Canadian-owned 2013 SFS? I don't know my made on date yet (I'm going to find that soon) but since we use a fair bit of salt up here, if salt can be the issue...

I called the dealership just to be sure - they ran the VIN to check. Call the svc dept - they can check your VIN to be sure. When I did, they wanted characters 4 through 6 and the last 8.

Did the same thing and both of our SFS retain their bills of good health.

More info ..

I went out to my Sante Fe and found the info plaque on the driver's door rear column.

Looks like mine got put together in June of 2013, a good three months after the 'bad axles' were being installed.

Hey, and my Sante Fe is really a KIA! And made in Georgia .. not Korea!

All 2013 North American Santa Fe's are made at Kia's assembly plant in Georgia. But that is a good thing! It is a new, state of the art facility. And the entire vehicle, including the steel and drivetrain components are made in the USA. It is probably one of the few "100% Made in the USA" vehicles.

Just call the dealer and give them your info. They'll run your vin and check the build date. You then take it in and they'll give you and rental while your SF is getting the axles installed. It's a easy process. A buddy of mine had his axles changed on his.

Wondering if anyone has seen a notice show up on your "MyHyundai" web page under Recalls or Service?
One would think something would be posted from Hyundai by now..
