I've changed the cabin air filter. sprayed Lysol before I put the new filter in into that spot. sprayed it at the air intake at the base of the windshield. bad smell remains after Lysol smell went away.

I'm suspecting leaves and crap stuck somewhere, don't know how to get at it. I fear the smell is making us sick when we drive the car

I recently heard about a product called Proclenz that is supposed to be a biologic odor suppressor. I haven't used it, but I figure you need to get something that not only kills the odors not only in the vents, but in the fabric and other exposed areas of the cabin as well. A spray will only work for a short period of time...I am thinking about giving it a try myself just to see if it can handle removing 8 years of 'use' from my car...I don't want to feel nose-blind :)
