I have a 2004 Santa Fe GLS 3.5L that has 253,000 miles on it. Just recently it started running a little rough. My local mechanic read the codes and it said that cylinders 1,3 and 5 have random misfires.

He replaced all 6 spark plugs (they were due) and replaced the plug wires to the 3 cylinders in question (1,3,5). We could see that one of the wires was arcing and since they were original wires they really needed replacing. We also cleaned all the fuel injectors.

We then replaced the pre-catalytic converter underneath cylinders 1,3 and 5 and the problem is still there.

The codes are:

PO300B Random Multiple Misfire Detected

PO301B Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

PO303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

PO305B Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

PO446 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit

Any ideas?

It can't be the coils since there are 3 and each coil handles 2 cylinders. If a coil goes bad then an odd and an even cylinder would be in trouble. I just have the 3 odd cylinders that misfire.

For all of the codes you have listed logon to hmaservice.com go to DTC and select your vehicle. Go to engine control and you will see all of the codes along with the troubleshooting and repair procedures. P0446 is related to the Canister Close Valve (CCV). As far as the codes for the misfires the hmaserive site has a great troubleshooting guide for this as well. Following the procedures in order will help pinpoint the problem. Since the plugs and wires were replaced then you already know that is not the issue. It does mention crankshaft position sensor, fuel delivery which included fuel pump, filter, regulator, injectors to name a few. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Look at the coil bodies for large grey-white discolor of coil winding body there at radiator side of coil under the steel strap material of the coil..

Common problem for the coils to burn out.

You are not going to like the price of the coils. If Hyundai dealer not have 3 in stock, run the KIA dealer if you need them all same day, otherwise, order what you missing.

The 0446 is the vent system cannot breath (canister is clogged).. replace the canister, and the air filter for the canister, while it is all apart, replace the canister close valve.
