Hi,

I have a 2002 Elantra Auto GLS and have recently had a problem with the transmission. It will be working fine while driving and then suddenly there will be a clunk and it sticks in 3rd gear. This has been becoming more frequent.

If I turn off the engine and restart the gearbox works ok again which suggests to me something electrical. We recently had the car serviced by a Hyundai dealer who reset the car's computer but this has not resolved the problem and it just randomly happens.

Has anybody else encountered this issue? Would be grateful for any information or suggestions.

Well there's plenty of things which will make it go into "safe mode", which is the symptom you describe. The codes would have give you solid clues as to what the problem is. Hard to imagine the dealer just "reset" the codes without recording them or suggesting some service.

No doubt it will do it again, and when it does you need a code scan done. In the US, we can get big box stores to do code scans for free. Maybe they do that in Aussie?
