Hello all. I'm installing a re manufactured engine in my 2001 Santa Fa Manual trans. While moving parts from one engine to the other, I noticed something strange. The "new" engine doesn't have a balance shaft. There's a brass freeze plug there, with nothing behind it. Was this just an over sight of the engine builder, or did some later models not use the balance shaft? Should I just take the balance shaft out of the old motor and install it in the new one, or is there more to it than that?

Also, a while back I asked if it was possible to remove a Santa Fe engine from the top. I asked because the manual says it has to be dropped to the floor and the car lifted off it. Well, I found out for sure yesterday the engine will lift out of the car like most other engines. Just thought I'd mention it in case somewhere down the line someone else searches the forum for the same answer.

ALL our 2.4 Santa Fe & Sonata have a balance shaft.... Find out why the took it out... shaft journals will likely have pressured oil to them, what they do about the open oil holes ?

Where the engine come from ?

Upon further investigation, I found that both shafts are missing. The one behind the oil pump is gone too. I was going to just use the shafts out of the old engine, but the one won't fit in to the journals. I'm pretty agitated.

Engine came from a place called Kar King auto in Ontario California. I'll be discussing this with them tomorrow. Hopefully their willing to work with me.

Update: Called Kar King today. The guy there assures me that they build their motors to no need the balance shafts. He claims the balance shafts are often a source of problems in this motor, and Kar King builds motors specifically so they won't need with balance shaft. He wouldn't really explain how they do that. Sound reasonable, or bogus?

So THEY decided Hyundai made a mistake by putting in a balance shaft??? And somehow they can remove the balance shaft and now it's BETTER? What's wrong with this picture? For my two years on this forum, no one ever said the balance shaft was a PROBLEM. The problem comes with people not changing the balance shaft belt so it breaks and messes up the motor. So my guess is the belt broke on this motor and messed it up good. I think I'd be asking for my money back for this OBVIOUSLY incomplete motor.

From what I gather, they decided that the balance shafts are not needed in this engine. So they don't install either the one driven off the crank or the one driven by the oil pump. This isn't a motor that the belt broke on. It's a completely re-manufactured engine. The journals for the balance shaft are intact and brand new. And the oil passages are blocked. It's obvious that they did this on purpose, and did it as correctly as it could be done. Lots of inline 4 engines run fine without balance shafts, which is why I didn't immediately dismiss the engine builders claim as BS. And also why I wanted to consult the experts here. ;-)

New 1 by me.. here on dealer level I have not heard of such thing.. I can tell you that 4 cylinder can get shakey at low idle speeds due to all the weight moving slowly (pulses) until speed get higer where pulses are closer together to cancel out..

I would do a lot of research on the topic, and then consider return for money back, as engine has been internaly altered from factory spec... that 2.4 with shafts is fairly smooth acroos the rpm range as long as shafts are corret in time.

Yeah, I'm trying to research it. Asking you guys is part of my research. ;-) I'm sort of in a tough spot here. I hate to send it back and delay this engine swap any longer, but on the other hand, I'd hate to install the engine and find out they turned my car into a paint shaker. I'm going to drop the engine builder an e-mail and see if maybe they can make it a little more clear to me exactly how they can eliminate the balance shafts. I'll report back what I find.

Thanks all for the input. Any more ideas, please share!
